Help build a 173 m seawall to protect Motunau Beach from erosion—local community effort underway. Stage 1 underway, we need you!
Motunau, Canterbury
Our cherished Motunau Beach is under threat—coastal erosion is accelerating, putting homes, community spaces, and the foreshore at risk.
A partnership with Motunau Beach Ratepayers Association, Hurunui District Council, ECan, and local fishermen has received approval to begin rebuilding the Seawall at the mouth of the Motunau River.
This essential work involves stacking 596 concrete blocks over 173 m to protect the shoreline and encourage natural sand replenishment in Sandy Bay. Concrete blocks are highly effective and repairable. 250 blocks have been donated by Christchurch Ready Mix; the rest are funded privately.
$160,000 total covers freight, placement, and installation.
Why your support matters: every dollar helps prevent further erosion, safeguards homes and heritage, and sustains our beach environment. This isn’t just a seawall—it’s protecting our community identity, history and lifestyle.
We're working together and acting now, because once the shoreline retreats further, the chance to act may be gone.
All funds raised will go towards freight, placement, and installation of 596 concrete blocks to rebuild the 173 m Training Seawall—protecting our foreshore, homes, and heritage
