Hi Everyone, just a very quick update on where things are at with mum's residency in NZ.

She is still on her Visitor's visa (expiring Feb 2023!!) and we are running on a fine timeline to get all the documents in order to submit to the NZ Minister of Immigration to request a Special Direction so mum could remain in NZ permanently. The documents requested by the lawyer has taken us several months to put together, and we are still counting days. Sadly, mum has been unwell, with stress-related illnesses, landing her in hospital a few times, along with other health issues - NOT related to her respiratory condition. This has resulted in bills well over $12 000, which of course is not included in our budget. We, as a family, are extremely grateful for the assistance we have received from everyone on this platform...all the donations, kind wishes and support. We are a very long way from reaching some sort of financial target to help cover expenses. I would like to request that you share this page/link with friends or on socials (where possible) to see if we could please raise a little more money to help with expenses. I am happy to provide more information, if anyone is interested in where the money is allocated to. Thank you again for your support and kindness. Every cent helps.

  • From Resident to Overstayer to possible Visitor..or Deportee???

    Hey everyone,

INZ has agreed to consider a visitors visa for mum. This is both insulting and distressing for mum and all of us! She is now required to provide a medical certificate (which involves an immigration GP visit and chest X-ray). Unfortunately visitors' visas can only be approved for periods of 3, 6 or 9 months, depending on the level of health the applicant has. This means mum can only stay for a maximum of the period approved by INZ (if they approve!). The other concern is covid...obviously we don't want mum to get sick at all, but with covid doing the rounds, mum is forced to almost live like a hermit until her medicals (late March).. This, too, is distressing as mum's social interaction is impacted. Let alone the emotional strain and mum's overall mental health being affected by all of this.

As I'm typing this update, I can't help but feel powerless and angry at the same time. How is it okay/fair for INZ to deny a retired woman her right to be with her husband, children and grandkids after living in NZ for over 14 years? How is it okay to rip away the life she has built up here and not take into account that she is law abiding person, no threat to society and not a criminal? Why is it so much easier for a criminal deportee, illegal migrants and non english speaking people to be handed an NZ passport and they have offered nothing to show loyalty to this country to date? I just don't get it.

We would like to thank everyone for your support and for following mum's journey. Also thank you for all the contributions received so far. If you are able to contribute to the upcoming expenses (medicals around $400), and ongoing lawyer's fees, we will be very grateful.

I will keep you all posted as soon as we have an outcome from INZ on this application. Take care everyone and stay safe.

  • Good bye 2021

A quick little update on where things are at at the moment.

As mum's interim visa has now expired, she is considered an illegal resident/visitor in NZ. Yes, that means mum is no longer eligible for any public service/support in the event of health related issues. The lawyer has informed us that INZ is unlikely to make a decision before the end of 2021. Just another blow, leaving mum hanging, as they have done for the past almost 14 years.

You may wonder: why doesn't she just go back to South Africa?

    Well, here's why:

Firstly, mum and Len have been married for over 20 years now...Surely she can't be expected to leave him behind? If she did...How will she survive? Anyone over the age of 55 is unemployable in SA. She is also not eligible for a state pension...not having lived and worked in SA for 14 years. How will she pay for food, medication? The public health system would fail her in the first 10 minutes and no doubtedly have dire consequences. How will she get around? Public transport is dangerous for the average Joe Soap, more so for a retiree. Older people are at great risk of becoming victims to crime...the thought of this being a high probability is enough to give mum and us all anxiety. What about her husband? He has a stable position, pension to care for them both here in NZ...he is equally unemployable in SA. That makes double the financial and emotional strain on them.

In NZ mum and Len have a great family support system and they have all they need around them. Mum imposes no harm to society or any individual in NZ and it is just cruel to think that a government would rip a grandmother, mother, wife and friend away from those she dearly loves and need in her life.

I also wanted to give some feedback on how your donations have helped us so far: I received around NZ$600 into my bank account (over 2 payments) in the last month, and this has covered 1/3 of the most recent legal fee. Thank you so much to everyone that has given financially and/or emotionally.

Our total legal and INZ costs to date, is in excess of NZ$8000. We are quite desperate for any small amounts to help cover these and upcoming expenses. December/January is a difficult time for anyone to part with money, we understand. If you are able to contribute something small in 2022, we would be forever grateful. I promise to keep you posted on where things are at and to use the donations solely for legal (1st) and medical costs (2nd) if any surplus.

If INZ grants mum residency (best outcome), we will withdraw from this funding page once we have our costs covered. If, on the other hand, INZ continues to deny mum the right to live here, we will continue to fight for it.

WE have a long way to go in our journey with INZ. They don't seem to consider the emotional and financial impact their decisions are having on families like ours and that of many other immigrants in NZ.

Enjoy this festive season with your loved ones, if you are able to. We surely will be doing that with our mum, nanna and wife as we see 2021 out.

    Hey everyone,

Thank you for all the donations so far. We are extremely grateful for every cent offered so far.

Sadly Immigration NZ has declined mum's application for a visa to stay in NZ. They offered no reasons for their decision and frankly ignored everything outlined by mum's lawyer. This has, no doubt, come as a shock to us and has given us limited time to apply for INZ to reconsider their decision (by 30 Nov).

What does this mean for mum?

Mum's Interim Visa which expires on 7 December 2021. After this she will become an illegal resident in NZ and will be at risk of being deported. Yep, 7 December is D-day! Until a decision has been reached by INZ, Mum will also not be eligible for any publically funded services, like health care. Long story short, all medications for her chronic condition, any visits to the hospital will have to be funded privately. The unnecessary stress we are exposed to is putting so much strain on Mum and her health.

Please share this message around, we still have a long way to go in terms of raising enough funds to help keep Mum here, with us.

I will update once we have more news to share.

So, this week mum's lawyer was able to push INZ for an extension on her current visa application. The new date is 10 November. YAY! And THANK YOU for making it possible with your donations.

Some of you may know that mum has a chronic health conditions, which is not in her favour, even though she has lived in NZ for almost 14 years and her only dream is to be given the freedom to continue living here with her loved ones.

Unfortunately specialist lawyers are very costly and become more so each step closer to the end goal: keeping our family together by keeping mum here in NZ with us.

Please subscribe and share amongst your friends/family. Your love can make a difference in keeping us all together.
