Help restore the John Hayward Memorial Hut – Preserve a Backcountry Legacy

$880 of $15,000 goal
Given by 13 generous donors in 8 weeks

Restore the John Hayward Memorial Hut so future generations can enjoy this special backcountry place.

Canterbury Region

We’re working to restore and maintain the John Hayward Memorial Hut, a special backcountry shelter in the Kowai River area with deep history and meaning for many.

Built by Lincoln College's Tussock Grasslands and Mountain lands Institue in 1973 with permission from Brooksdale Station it served as a base for Lincoln high country hydrology research led by Dr John Hayward. The research program was completed in 1980

Today, the hut continues to serve hunters, trampers, and families as a place of shelter, connection, and shared memories. However, it now needs essential maintenance to keep it safe and usable.

With the support of the Hayward family, and Brooksdale Station who are incredibly appreciative of this work, we’re committed to restoring and protecting the hut for the future.

As a father, I’m now taking my own kids into the hills, and I want them—and others—to experience the same adventures and connection to the outdoors that places like this provide.

This project is about more than repairs. It’s about preserving a legacy and ensuring this special place remains for future generations.

Use of funds

Funds will go toward roof and structural repairs, weatherproofing, painting, interior upkeep, and transporting materials into the backcountry, ensuring the hut remains safe, usable, and preserved for future generations, possibly new verandah if funds allow

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
