SAVE THE MAITAI
We need your help to support the campaign to stop development of 550 or more houses in an area known as Kaka Valley, within the Maitai Valley.
The Maitai is a unique area in Nelson; a treasured, peaceful valley where generations of Nelsonians have swum in the river, picnicked, played with their children, cycled, walked their dogs and enjoyed many other activities. It's a slice of quiet Kiwi countryside free of city life constraints, just 5 minutes from the CBD, which all Nelsonians have the freedom to access - one of the special spots that make Nelson a great place to live!
THIS TREASURE IS AT RISK!
The proposed development is in Kaka Valley, which is at the end of Ralphine Way - directly behind Dennes Hole and opposite Sunday Hole.
This will result in an estimated 2000 car trips per day along Maitai and Nile streets, as well as light pollution, urban run-off into the river and the loss of the rural nature of the valley.
In 2006 Nelsonians said they strongly opposed development in the Maitai area.*
In 2019 Nelsonians said they support building up, not building out.**
The developers will be requesting this land is rezoned from rural to residential within the next few weeks (possibly this month, July 2020). If this goes through then they will be hard to stop. But we can change the outcome. If enough voices join together and say NO, our councillors must listen.
Your donation will help keep the Maitai and Kaka Valley free of residential housing,
heavy traffic flows, and air, water & light pollution.

Use of funds
Any funds raised will go towards campaign costs such as: printing campaign flyers & posters, online advertising, advertisements in local media, fees for market stalls, banners, and displays. Any surplus will be donated to a local charity.

IMPORTANT OPPORTUNITY ! - NELSON PLAN OPEN FOR COMMENTS 14 October 2020
**PLEASE MAKE A SUBMISSION TO NCC TO STOP PLANS TO DEVELOP THE MAITAI VALLEY**
Council have labelled the Kaka Valley area of the Maitai as a ‘Development Area’ in the Draft Nelson Plan. Please submit against this and ask for the rural character of the Maitai Valley and Kaka Valley to be preserved.
The Draft Plan outlines how NCC will develop Nelson and manage our environment. Your comments can be brief, but PLEASE use this opportunity. We are in this situation because very few of us submitted against last year’s Future Development Strategy consultation which included Kaka Valley as potential development land. Inclusion in the Draft Plan is the next step.
