Save Hawke (the cat)

  • Update #4 - On the mend

We've been back home for a few days now, and things are going really well.

Hawke loves being back home. He is confined to a medium-sized cage when unsupervised so that he doesn't accidentally hurt himself, but whenever someone is home he can be found cuddling with them on the couch and purring to his heart's content. He spends most mornings cuddling with me under my blankets.

This morning marks the first day of cat physiotherapy. His hips and rear legs need to be exercised several times a day to ensure that he retains mobility in his limbs after recovery. I never imagined that I would spend my time making bicycle motions with my cat's legs, but hey, life happens. And as long as you're petting him, Hawke doesn't seem to mind too much.

As for the costs of the surgery - it ended up being only $3,769.99. That's still a lot of money, but much less than the initial quote of $5,000. With the help of our generous donors, we managed to raise just over $3,000 towards paying for Hawke's medical bill. This means that we only had to pay $700 ourselves, which was a lot more manageable and enabled us to pay for his surgery upfront.

I know that we keep on thanking everybody, but seriously, thank you so much for helping us through this difficult time. There are no words and no emoticons that can adequately convey how thankful we are for all the help that we received. Whether it was emotional support or financial support - every bit of encouragement was invaluable and we will be forever grateful.

What goes around comes around, and we hope that in time we will have a chance to help our wonderful supporters as much as they've helped us.

    Much love,

Marijn, Noelani, Laura, and Alessa (and Hawke!)

Hawke's surgery went really well! Everybody at the clinic loved him and said that he was a really well-behaved cat. Hawke is now back home with the rest of the family and gets to look forward to 6-8 weeks of physiotherapy.

I will post a more detailed update tomorrow :)

We had our consultation with the specialist this morning at 8AM. He talked us through the x-ray, and boy it was not a pretty picture.

Hawke had fractured his pelvis on the right side of his body, and managed to completely dislocate his pelvis on the left side (i.e., it was no longer attached to his spine). There was the potential for nerve damage, but since Hawke experienced deep pain in his hind legs it meant that at least his nerves were not completely dead, just damaged.

After the consult we agreed that they could go ahead with the surgery. Four hours later we received a phone call that all had gone well and that, barring any complications, we would be able to take Hawke home tomorrow.

Noelani, Laura, Alessa and I would once again like to thank everybody who donated from the bottom of my heart. We cannot put into words how much the support we've received means to us. We were so close to losing a beloved member of our family, but thanks to everyone we managed to give Hawke a second chance.

    Thank you so much.

Noelani and I travelled to Christchurch with Hawke today. The specialist clinic called us at 11.30AM to ask if we could have Hawke in Christchurch by 5PM. It is typically a 5-6 hour drive to Christchurch, so we left Dunedin in a bit of a frenzy, but we made it! (We arrived at the clinic at 4.59PM).

We have a consultation with the specialist tomorrow at 8AM to discuss the details of the surgery. I will post another update as soon as possible after that.

P.S. I cannot believe that we already raised over $800!!! Thank you so much to all of our donors. I cannot convey how much it all means to me. Just know that I cried several times today just out of sheer gratitude towards everyone.
