My companion animal, Hawke, needs specialist surgery to fix severe trauma to his pelvis and right back leg.
Otago
I got Hawke shortly after my dad passed away unexpectedly last year. Hawke has been a constant source of comfort and love, and is integral to not only my wellbeing, but the wellbeing of everyone in my household.
He went missing on Monday night, and on Tuesday night we found him under a bush, unable to walk and clearly in a great deal of pain. An emergency vet visit revealed that Hawke had been hit by a car and had suffered severe trauma to his pelvis and his right back leg. There was a high chance that he'd have to be put down.
This morning a miracle happened - the vet called and informed us that a specialist surgeon in Christchurch would be able to operate on Hawke and fix his injuries. Furthermore, Hawke would be able to continue having a good quality of life. The operation is set to take place tomorrow (10/06/16).
Unfortunately, the surgery will cost us somewhere between $4,500 and $5,500. My flatmates and I are struggling to raise this amount of money in such a short time.
We therefore ask for your help. If you could donate some money towards paying for Hawke's surgery, we will be eternally grateful. Even just a small amount would be appreciated. Every little bit helps.
Thank you,
Marijn, Noelani, Laura, and Alessa
I'm involved because Hawke is my cat and I don't know what I would do without him.
Update #4 - On the mend 14 June 2016
We've been back home for a few days now, and things are going really well.
Hawke loves being back home. He is confined to a medium-sized cage when unsupervised so that he doesn't accidentally hurt himself, but whenever someone is home he can be found cuddling with them on the couch and purring to his heart's content. He spends most mornings cuddling with me under my blankets.
This morning marks the first day of cat physiotherapy. His hips and rear legs need to be exercised several times a day to ensure that he retains mobility in his limbs after recovery. I never imagined that I would spend my time making bicycle motions with my cat's legs, but hey, life happens. And as long as you're petting him, Hawke doesn't seem to mind too much.
As for the costs of the surgery - it ended up being only $3,769.99. That's still a lot of money, but much less than the initial quote of $5,000. With the help of our generous donors, we managed to raise just over $3,000 towards paying for Hawke's medical bill. This means that we only had to pay $700 ourselves, which was a lot more manageable and enabled us to pay for his surgery upfront.
I know that we keep on thanking everybody, but seriously, thank you so much for helping us through this difficult time. There are no words and no emoticons that can adequately convey how thankful we are for all the help that we received. Whether it was emotional support or financial support - every bit of encouragement was invaluable and we will be forever grateful.
What goes around comes around, and we hope that in time we will have a chance to help our wonderful supporters as much as they've helped us.
Much love,
Marijn, Noelani, Laura, and Alessa (and Hawke!)
