Save or Shave my beard and Save the Orangutans

Auckland

Sarah-Jane and I are off on a 6 month adventure going to South America, Canada, Iceland, UK, and Malaysia. We are mixing it up and doing a couple of volunteer projects and working on farms. We are hoping to raise money for our last stop The Great Orangutan Project by asking you to donate money and commenting whether you want to "Save" or "Shave" my beard.

If more money is donated for "Save", I will get to keep my beard for as long as i see fit!

If "Shave" raises more money I will go baby face and be clean shaven on the Sunday after the final day.

Please donate what you can and remember, Save the Beard, Save the Orangutans!

Stewart Laing's involvement (page creator)

Due to mass deforestation, mining and forest fires, the habitat of the area's orangutans is depleting and under constant threat. As a consequence, the species is now classed as critically endangered. The Matang Wildlife Centre is a refuge for a number of animals including orangutans which have been left injured, orphaned or have been rescued, usually as a direct result of these threats. The centre works tirelessly to reverse this trend in a number of ways including working alongside the Sarawak Forestry Corporation, and this is thoroughly enriched by the involvement of the volunteers.

As a volunteer on this project, we will work as part of a team alongside the local facilitators to aid the Borneo orangutan sanctuary through improving husbandry standards, providing enrichment for the orangutans and assisting with construction tasks. This allows the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (who manage the centre which is owned by the Sarawak government) to concentrate on the rehabilitation of the orangutans in Borneo and the centre's other animals.

Use of funds

All funds raised will be donated to The Great Orangutan Project - Matang wildlife centre. We are paying for our own Accommodation and food while volunteering for a month.

We thought long and hard, then hard and long, AND as much as we respect everyone's right for personal expression and the ownership of their own facial ornamentation, in this instance it is SHAVE. (you can always grow it back right?)
