On the vets recommendation we have decided to get Snowballs leg amputated. This is going to cost $1104.60 all up.
He is booked in for the operation tomorrow and will come home tomorrow night or the day after.
We have the x-ray results back and they are not good, Snowball has 3 fractures in his right tibia, one of which is a compound fracture (lots of pieces). There may also be fractures in the fibula.
The vets recommendation is to amputate his leg, they believe that is the treatment with the most likely chance of him having a decent quality of life afterwards and the fewest complications. Splints wouldn't be effective at all, the leg wouldn't heal straight if it healed at all and would slow him down and possibly cause him ongoing pain, Surgical intervention to line up the bones and pin them in place has a much greater risk of secondary infection and a fairly high chance of the leg still not healing straight.
