Save Governors Bay jetty

  • We are nearly there!

We've come a long way since this page automatically closed in 2018.

Outside of Givealittle, we've raised almost $300,000 from donations, fundraisers, and a Rata Foundation grant of $50,000. Thanks to everyone who has supported us so far!

In July 2019, Christchurch City Council confirmed its intention to match the Trust dollar-for-dollar and increased the budget in the annual plans to $935,000. The Council also agreed that pro bono services provided by the Trustees and others have a dollar value when it comes to co-funding the jetty.

Things are now getting real! We've found ways of reducing the project costs down from $3 million, including using volunteers to refurbish as many of the handrails and planks as we can, and procuring our own timber at cost (rather than buying through a contractor at a mark-up). Added to the pro bono services, this is saving us hundreds of thousands of dollars.

We're re-opening this Givelittle page to reach the wider New Zealand community, asking you to help us in the final push. We are not saving a unique jetty just for us - we are gifting it to future generations.

We plan to start removing the handrails this year and start rebuilding the jetty in February 2020.

We are relying on people and businesses to give a little - or give a lot - to make this happen.

Donations of $500 or more will be recognised by a name or short message on a plank (see www.savethejetty.org for details).

    Happy new year!

2018 is going to be a monumental year for the jetty because we've started fundraising in earnest.

We launched a 'sponsor a plank' appeal just before Christmas where donations of $500 or more will be recognised with a marine-grade stainless steel plaque, etched with the donor's name or short message, on "their plank" on the new jetty. With 1500 planks on the jetty, this could raise up to $750,000.

We are also applying for 3 major grants this year. This will potentially raise another $900,000.

The Council have already committed $535,000, but we will be pitching to them to commit to match us dollar-for-dollar in April when they ask for feedback on their long-term plan review. We have the support of deputy mayor, Andrew Turner.

If all three things are successful, then we will have reached the funding needed to rebuild the jetty and it will be all systems go!

We're getting some great publicity next week (29 January) for our sponsor a plank campaign - there will be an article about our journey to save the jetty in New Zealand Women's weekly.

If you haven't sponsored a plank but would like to, I've tried to make it as painless as possible: http://www.savethejetty.org/sponsor-a-plank

Don't forget that the 33% tax credit applies to donations to our charitable Trust, so once the IRD have "paid" their 33% by refunding your tax, the cost to you is $335.

If you have any questions, let us know! Email savethejetty@gmail.com.

Welcome to The Year of the Jetty!

  • Big steps for jetty-kind

      24 July 2017

We're extending our campaign because we are in the midst of fundraising but haven't reached our total target.

Fundraising is only partly through this Givealittle page and we've made fantastic progress over the last year.

In addition to the generous donations we've received here and Christchurch City Council's commitment to provide $538,000, we've secured around $50,000 from our 'league of benefactors', and we're working on an application to the Lotteries Commission Heritage and Environment fund for a grant of $500,000.

In October 2016, we launched a membership scheme for the Trust ($20 per year) and we now have 128 loyal members.

In March 2017, we rocked the jetty with a variety of bands at Governors Bay Hotel and raised $1700 in one night. The community fundraisers have only just begun!

We have exciting news - we have raised enough to start the project by engaging design engineers and applying for resource consent. But first, we're consulting with the community on their design ideas, desires, and suggestions.

See our website for more details.
