Saving Butts Sinking Putts! Barrie Coleman's Journey to Every Golf Course in NZ to raise funds and awareness of Mental Health
Canterbury
Barrie Coleman (Our good friend and fellow trustee) lost his wife Megan just over two years ago at the young age of 49. Megan had struggled with her mental health for many years, and it finally overcame her. Left behind were Barrie and his three beautiful daughters, Jess (25), Katie (22) and Georgia(18).
The loss of Megan has fueled Barrie and a group of friends to raise funds and bring much-needed awareness to the issues faced by everyday people suffering from mental illness. Over the last two years, we have organised two large golf days, which have raised over $75,000 for I am Hope. We also formed our charitable trust, the Links Foundation, enabling us to organise and run events for charitable purposes.
Now that his girls have all left home, Barrie wants to do more. He wants to combine his love of golf with his passion for raising awareness and vital funds for mental health counselling via the I Am Hope Foundation. He has an ambitious plan to play every golf course in NZ (414 at the last count). To do this he has taken over a year off work and plans to play an average of 6 rounds every week. To a non-golfer, this may sound like fun; however, as a golfer, I can assure you it will be an arduous and challenging journey.
He is travelling the length of NZ in a campervan that will be raffled off at the end of his journey to raise further funds for I Am Hope. This page has been set up to provide a place where people can donate to Barrie's fundraising efforts!
The Links Foundation was formed following the loss of a loved friend of the trustees due to mental illness. The trust aims to raise funds and awareness of health issues by organising events.
The surplus of all funds raised will go to I Am Hope to assist in the battle against Mental Health Issues. We hope to cover most of the expenses via sponsorship; however, some of the funds could be used to reimburse Barrie for essential expenses.
