While at The Rock School of Dance, I was given a full scholarship to train and dance with the Huntsville Ballet Company, in Alabama!
Wellington
Artistic Director of the Huntsville Ballet Company, Mr Phillip Otto, is a permanent guest teacher at the Summer Ballet Intensive at The Rock, in Philadelphia, where I've just had 5 weeks full-time tuition. He gave me a full scholarship to continue training at the Huntsville Ballet School and dance with the Huntsville Ballet Company until June 2016.
All I need to provide is my accommodation and living expenses, and ballet shoes etc, but all tuition and costumes will be covered by the scholarship. I have already organised private board in Huntsville, and a friend has helped us pay for my flight over to the US - I'm booked to leave on September 21!
Therefore, I need to raise money for -
my return airfare and medical insurance - $3,000
some living money to start with - $700
ballet/pointe shoes - $300
I've already got my visa organised too, so I'm halfway to getting to Alabama!
Gaining a scholarship was my goal in attending and working hard at the Summer Intensive at The Rock, and I'm so grateful that many friends and strangers made my trip to Philadelphia possible through our various fundraising efforts and also crowdfunding.
We had classes 6 hours a day, 6 days a week, and I even went early and stayed late to do extra practice - it was challenging, but so exciting and invigorating! Most of the other dancers were already full-time students, but I held my own - the friends I made couldn't believe I was only training after school for 6 hours of ballet classes a week in NZ. This made me feel really good!
I will be so grateful if you feel moved to help me achieve this next stage in my training - after this I will be a proficient enough dancer to gain employment with a ballet company, and earn my own income :)
I can't believe my dream is coming true, but I am so happy it is! Thank you again.

Since I have been dancing for only just over four years, five weeks full-time training has had the huge effect on me that I hoped it would...My mind is more clear and calm, my dancing is stronger and more confident, and I achieved my goal to attain a full scholarship for the coming year!
Artistic Director of the Huntsville Ballet, Mr Otto, liked my dancing, and said I would dance with the Company as well as be in training at the School - this is what made me so excited about this scholarship - experience with a company is a great asset at this stage! And none of this would have happened without people's help to get me to The Rock in July.
I can hardly believe this is all happening, but I'm so grateful to everyone for helping me attain my dream of becoming a dancer and eventually helping lots of other kids realise their dreams as well - I have great plans to help young New Zealanders follow their passion for dancing!
I sit my final exam for RAD Advanced 2 ballet in Wellington on August 31, and then, all going well, I'll be off back to the US to start my busy dancing days in Huntsville :)
Thank you so much everyone! I will share all the news and pix again with you on FB :)

Yay! Distinction in my exam! 24 September 2015
We just got our results back for our final Vocational Ballet exam RAD Advanced 2, and I've kept on track - I got Distinction again!
I'm so happy :D I was actually a little worried cos being away from class in Philadelphia for most of last term only gave me a few weeks to practice up when I got back, and I muffled a few of the exercises.
It's only just hitting me...I've got my final exam under my belt and will have ARAD after my name soon (Associate of Royal Academy of Dance)...crazy...It's done! I'm so blown away!! :D
And heaps of hugs and thanks to Mum, my bros and sis-in-law, my ballet teachers and all our friends who believed in me and helped me financially and with time and skills right from the beginning...to my whanau all over - Kapiti, Christchurch, Wellington, Wairoa, and in Aust - for the aroha and keeping me connected to my roots...to my new friends and teachers in the US...and all the "strangers" who donated through Givealittle this year...you've all helped me climb my first big mountain - thank you everybody so much!!!
Onward and upward! :D xo
Oh thank you so much Jim! Can't wait to meet you all in Huntsville :D
