Sean Herbert is going off to Italy to represent New Zealand at two sailing worlds events, the Open Bic Worlds and Youth Teams Racing Worlds
Auckland
I am Sean Herbert, 15 years old, I live in Gulf Harbour, Auckland and am totally committed and passionate about my sailing as you’ll see from the following.
I have been sailing since I was 9 years old and pursued my sailing through the junior skiff class, the O’pen Bic. The O’pen Bic has provided an excellent learning platform that I found the love for sailing and progressed quickly. I had great success in the class nationally and internationally in Australia, winning the Worlds in Miami, USA, in my 2nd season of sailing. I have then progressed into the Starling class which in my first year finished 3rd at the Nationals. Over this season I dominated the class winning all major regattas. I was presented with the prestigious award of the Sir Peter Blake Memorial Trophy at the Sir Peter Blake regatta and took out the National champs.
Sir Russel Coutts has invited me to participate in the O’pen Bic Worlds 2017 which is being held in Arco, Lake Garda, Italy as a result of my historical and recent results in this class. My most recent results in the O’pen Bic are – 1st Mid-Winter Cup and 1st Wellington O’pen Cup and winning the Starling Nationals. The last Open Bic Worlds I competed in was in 2015 in Australia where I placed second at a tough regatta, I’m going for one better this time round.

I have been Teams racing for 4 years on the New Zealand Secondary Schools level and have been in a growing team that is competing at the top. I have been selected into the New Zealand Youth Teams Sailing team which is also heading to the worlds in Italy, being held on Lake Garda, at the sailing club, Campione Univela. This is being hosted several weeks after the O’pen Bic Worlds, so I will be staying with relatives in between these regattas.
These opportunities can not be experienced in New Zealand and have huge benefits. Considering both are World regattas there is the great chance of raising the Kiwi flag with pride and bring some titles home. I would greatly appreciate your support in helping me to get there. You can follow the journey on Facebook through lots of feeds from myself, The New Zealand Youth Team Sailing page and Herbert Sailing.
I intend to get some quality photos of these events and will have a set printed, signed with thanks and sent to all donors of $100 or more.
The funds will be used to cover airfares, accommodation, living requirements, regatta entry fees and boat chartering.
NZ Forward Sailing Winter O'pen Cup 10 July 2017
That's the NZ Forward Sailing Winter O'pen Cup wrapped up for another year. Fun regatta with all the seasons and conditions putting me to the test, along with great competition which is exactly what I was hoping for to prepare for the Worlds. I placed first seven times out of 10 times, with a 3rd and two 4th's, which gave me the win by 12 points. Nice to come away with the title again this year, but that was just one of many practices on the journey.
Three day training for the teams racing, over the 13th-15th do some hard ground work and gel with the team!
Thank you, I really appreciate your donation and support.
Thank you very much, your support will go a long way!
Thank you for your kind words and sponsorship. Your support is not only represented by this financial donation but the use of your son's Open Bic, to help me prepare for the worlds.
Thank you for supporting the cause!
