Sewing machines and fabric for Myanmar refugee women

I’m raising funds for sewing machines, equipping and empowering Myanmar women refugees to clothe their families and create a livelihood

International

Since the military coup took place in Myanmar on the 1st of February 2021, more than 30,000 Chin refugees have sought safety in Mizoram, North East India. They are living under very difficult conditions and require basic necessities, including food, medicine, and clothing.

I have been raising funds for food and medicines and sewing machines.

Refugee women want to be able to provide clothing for their own families and use their skills to support themselves. Access to a sewing machine will empower them to achieve this goal, and give them business opportunities and livelihoods. One sewing machine will support many families and will enable them to clothe themselves, and the local communities.

The people of Mizoram State have been extraordinarily generous toward the refugees. They have provided other resources, but these supplies are now exhausted as the refugee population is larger than the local population.

Sewing machines will make a difference to the community in a positive way by providing dignity and motivation to improve their mental health and well-being.

As a result of donations so far, two sewing machines have been provided and are already in use.

Funds raised will go towards the sewing machines project in the Mizoram refugee camps.

Through my 15 year association with a former refugee from Chin State, Myanmar, I’ve been made aware of the plight of her people who have escaped their homeland, to Mizoram, North East India, as a result of the military junta take over and the civil war.

Sewing machines for Myanmar refugee women  30 June 2023

Your generous donations and funds raised enabled a workshop to be built and 14 sewing machines to be purchased. As a result 60 women are sewing clothes for their families as well as outside markets. I have skirts for sale. The weavers have set up their weaving looms and I have hand woven fabric as samples to sell. Every dollar went towards the project. The growth in self esteem and mental well-being is noted, though cyclone Mocha damaged the building and a rebuild of a more robust workshop is needed. Thank you for your donations and making a difference to the lives of this community.
