Fundraising for the Taiaroa whanau.

Dunedin, Otago

As most of you know, the fishing vessel Tamahine was lost on the rocks at Taiaroa Head, Dunedin, 04/06/24. Skipper Teone Taiaroa & 1 crewmember, were airlifted to safety. All he managed to get off the boat was his chart plotter with generations of marks, his stef the Maori knife, Shoutout Stef, don't be afraid to get onboard bruv. Tag him in guys. The Taiaroa family are without the means to provide for themselves or replace the vessel.

The Taiaroa's are a generational fishing family dating back five generations with Teone's grandchildren being the 6th generation but currently will miss that opportunity with the loss of the vessel.

A little insight, Tamahini 7422 built by Davey Scotts of Invercargill, She was 46ft when launched in 1960. This wasn't her first rodeo but sadly it was her last. The Taiaroa's are the local Iwi going back a few generations, to the Taiaroa Head Pa.. Very well respected in their community of the Otago Peninsula and fishing community. They've always been the ones giving back or rescuing others with nothing sought in return.

I, Brad Mathieson, long time friend of the Taiaroa's, grew up close to them. The amount of times they've helped me out, now it's my turn to ask the public to give a little koha, every little bit helps, it doesn't have to be financial, if anyone in the fishing community can help towards any fishing gear or anything, also please share this as many places as possible.

Fishermen don't do well on land, let's help get them back on the water.

Close family friend. I've known them as long as I can remember. Grew up 400 meters down the road, with the same sea view of Otakou.

Use of funds

*Update 12/06: Funds raised will now go towards a new vessel. The family are currently meeting their day to day needs and this will be updated if that should change.

Day to day living expenses after total loss of income. In a perfect world if it got to the point, we could maybe look towards replacing the vessel as there's no means for replacement at this stage.

Update on the use of funds.  12 June 2024

The current status is the funds raised will go towards a replacement vessel this is over $100k.

As we are aware this may not be achieveable, the funds may need to be used to close the business which will cover things such as crew wages, bills etc as he has no current income. They are currently meeting day to day living but that may change at any time

We would like to extend a very heartfelt Thankyou to each and every single one of you who has shown support from the bottom of our hearts the love and support from friends, family and the community is heart warming.
