Sir Edmund Hillary Historic Landmark refurbishment project
Whangarei Heads, Northland
When BHCT was established, Sir Edmund Hillary was our first patron of the Trust and flew by helicopter to an area near Urquharts Bay for this official recognition. In his honour, a lovely Pohutukawa tree was planted and a beautiful natural wooden seat was installed that was engraved in dedication to Sir Ed.
This seat is there for all to enjoy - and unfortunately - this includes the stock that graze in those paddocks and the bench is becoming very much worse for wear.
We would like to raise funds for the refurbishment of this historic landmark seat, including an engraved plaque and a river rock surround to discourage the stock from using it as a scratching post.
The whole project will cost $2000 and we have already been granted $1000 from Ray White Real Estate Community Fund "We can help with that".
The seat is a historic landmark and once re-established, will be a point of interest for tourist visiting the area. It provides a lovely spot to sit and enjoy the views of the Bream Head Scenic Reserve's Mt Matariki and nearby Urqharts bay and is a point of pride for the citizens of Whangarei that this iconic New Zealand hero stood as patron for the ecological restoration of our beautiful Bream Head Scenic Reserve.
Bream Head is significant for its ecology, culture and history. The Bream Head (Te Whara) Conservation Trust is dedicated to the ecological restoration of the reserve to the way it was before pests and predators when all species were able to flourish.
The seat will be removed, refurbished and reinstalled with fresh engraving, a brass plaque and a stone surround. If we don't meet our target, we will eliminate the plaque and the stone surround.
