Christchurch, Canterbury

Our eldest son Hemi Tahuri was shot in the head in front of our daughter-in-law Missy Parata on the 15th of October 2021 in Karitane just North of Dunedin and had the bullet go through his brain. He has since been in Christchurch ICU, Dunedin Wards, rehab center in Dunedin and now Christchurch. By some miracle he was able to survive this attack but there is a long road to recovery, but has slowly started making great strides to get better.

Throughout this entire time our daughter-in-law Missy has been right by our sons side caring for him and is the main reason his recovery is going so well.

Missy has had to battle through her own trauma from this whole ordeal, and has given up her job as a youth justice worker which she truly loved and also their home to relocate to Christchurch to further Hemi's rehabilitation.

Missy has fought to receive financial and accommodation support from all the services that should help but has been denied any assistance from all services including ACC and Ministry of social development.

Whanau in Christchurch have amazingly been supporting Missy along with their two fur-babies, welcoming them into their home and words cannot express how greatly appreciative we are all of this.

For the next stage of this journey Hemi and Missy are looking to find a new home in Christchurch close to all the rehabilitation facilities but due to no finances are not in a position to do this, we are asking for any assistance to help Hemi and Missy move forward.

Appreciate you all!!!  12 October 2023

I wish to take the time to thank everyone who has helped our son and daughter throughout this whole journey and what a journey it has been.

To update you on them both, we had a major scare earlier this year when Hemi contracted meningitis and was rushed to hospital, once again he beat the odds and showed us all how strong he is, overcoming that and being discharged 1 week later. Hemi and Missy both travelled to Australia to surprise his uncle for his 30th birthday and on their return thanks to a lot of help from so many people have now moved in to their own house and plan on being there for many years to come. We are so blessed to have them a lot closer to us now and there are some very exciting times ahead for us all.

Plans for their wedding next year are now on the way and Hemi is walking so much more now and doing a lot of therapy with the help of our amazing daughter and it is so amazing to see both of their progress since.

We are blessed to have you all in our lives and words really cannot express how much gratitude we have for you all, God bless you all and from us all THANK YOU!!!
