We are seeking support to reach our financial target so that we can conduct a 2020 coastal clean up.
Southland
The Southern Coastal Charitable Trust was established in 2017 and is registered as a Charitable Trust.
O̅raka-Aprarima Rūnaka Inc. and Waihōpai Rūnaka Inc support the Trust along with several local entities such as Cray8, Sanfords, Ngai Tahu Seafood Products & Talleys.
We are looking for ongoing support for our objectives and specifically a clean up to be completed in 2020.
We have donations of $40,000 which puts the project well on it's way.
The specific objective is in deficit the sum of $22,250, which is required to ensure the clean up can go ahead. The break down of costs of the clean up include:
- Costs of a days worth of shipping to taxi the rubbish and waste from Fiordland ($6,000);
- Sacks and Fadges to hold rubbish ($4,740);
- Use of staff from Talleys for a week of recycling ($2,214);
- Bond contracting rubbish and cartage ($1,000); and
- Accommodation, Food and Volunteer Costs ($14,000)
Volunteers contribute $500 towards the costs associated with their attendance.
BACKGROUND:
Southern Coastal Charitable Trust aims to:-
• Promote the protection and preservation of the remote coastline environment in Southern New Zealand, Fiordland and Stewart Island.
• To organise and participate in regular clean-up operations to remove all unnatural items and rubbish from remote coastlines in Southern New Zealand, Fiordland and Stewart Island.
• To dispose of collected rubbish and other items in an environmentally appropriate manner.
• To raise funds to enable the Trust to carry out its objectives.
Benefits:
* Maintain the pristine nature of the coastline by removing unnatural items.
* Marine mammals, birds and fish will be to remove this source of contamination from their environment.
* New Zealanders and tourists is they can experience these areas in their natural state
People associated with the Southern Coastal Charitable Trust also organised: -
(i) The 2015 Fiordland Clean-Up – Breaksea Sound to Chalky Inlet;
(ii) The 2018 Stewart Island Coastal Clean Up, and;
(iii) A spot clean-up of the beaches south and north of Milford in September 2019.
The historical cost associated with these clean-ups are as follows: -
(a) 2015 Fiordland $134,220.00
(b) Stewart Island 2018 $124,624.00
(c) Spot clean up Milford 2019 $32,333.12
Southern Coastal Charitable Trust funds cleaning efforts for the beautiful Southern Coasts including Milford Sound and Stewart Island to preserve their unique qualities for future generations.
