Pōneke Ngeru Rescue cares for a Berhampore cat colony, rescuing, rehoming, and protecting both cats and local wildlife.

Kia ora,
I’m Kiri, founder of Pōneke Ngeru Rescue, established in 2020. Over the years, we’ve cared for a cat colony in Berhampore, rescuing over 50 cats and kittens. Unfortunately, we had to close the rescue last year, and the colony now lacks the care it needs. Recently, new kittens have been spotted, and it’s vital we address their welfare and protect native wildlife.
Our process:
• Kittens under 4-6 months are tamed and rehomed.
• Kittens over 6 months are assessed based on temperament and health.
• Healthy adults are released back to the colony, monitored, and fed by a nearby resident.
• Cats with illnesses or birth defects affecting their quality of life are humanely euthanised.
The colony carries FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis). While FIV spreads through bites or scratches, FIP is viral but not contagious.
I understand not everyone may agree with our work, but no other rescue who have capacity to take on this colony. It’s not the cats’ fault they were abandoned, and we aim to ensure the well-being of both the cats and the community.
If you spot a colony cat, please take a photo and get in touch. Our desexed, released cats are chipped, vaccinated, and FIV tested.
Thank you for your support!
