Severe flooding in Sri Lanka has left over half a million people displaced.
Wellington
The heaviest rains in a quarter of a century have pounded Sri Lanka since 14th May, ahead of the arrival of the south-west monsoon. Severe flooding has forced half a million people to flee their homes across the nation, as the death toll from days of torrential rain and landslides is currently over 60 and rising.
The district of Kegalle, about 100 kilometres north-east of the capital Colombo, has been worst-hit, with the toll from two separate landslides rising to 34. The northern town of Kilinochchi was struck by 372 millimeters (nearly 15 inches) of rain in just 24 hours. Workers in areas prone to landslides in the tea-producing district of Nuwara Eliya are being evacuated to safe zones.
Currently around 300,000 people have been moved to shelters while a further 200,000 are staying with friends or family.
Sri Lanka Unites NZ is raising funds for the SLU flood relief efforts in partnership with Rotary in Sri Lanka and will be looking to work with the SL Airforce to deliver relief to communities that are not accessible via land.
Funds raised will go towards providing immediate relief by way of water, non-perishable foods and clothes as well as long term resettlement efforts which will include resourcing of schools.
