Mosgiel, Otago

Kia ora friends, whānau and the community,

On the night of July 3rd 2023, a whānau of refugees formally from Syria and now reside in Mosgiel, suffered another viscous attack. Their property was set on fire under suspicious circumstances whilst they remained in their own home. This attack was not the first, and this whānau feel as though it will not be the last. This is their home, city, and country, where everyone should feel safe, especially this particular population group. A group who fled a country of war and violence, to come to what should be safety. However, for this whānau, this has not been the case. This whānau in our community have been at the hands of SEVERAL viscous hate crimes during the past year, with a devastating increase of attacks within the past two months which include, but is not limited to, verbal abuse, damages to property and frightening visits at early hours of the morning. This is just a short list of the suffering this beautiful whānau have been exposed to. A whānau who live in constant fear, ongoing loss of sleep, the inability to feel safe leaving their house and extensive costs of damaged property. This is all a result of r@cism from a group who find joy in terrorizing a vulnerable whānau, who just want to live in peace! The police in our community have failed to keep this family safe, it is now our turn to step in, support this whānau and show them what it truly means to live in our country 💜
