Stroke Rehabilitation Fundraiser

To equip and run a Not for Profit, Exercise Rehabilitation Centre for people living the effects of Stroke.

Wellington

Every hour of every day someone in New Zealand experiences a stroke, and the long-term effects of a stroke can be devastating for the survivor and their loved ones.

Stroke Special Ops (SSOPS) is a community based, not-for-profit, stroke rehabilitation service run by Clinical Exercise Physiologist, Anna Hobman, a Personal Trainer, Glen Small and a wonderful Volunteer Heather Mordaunt.

Working with people who have been affected by stroke, the personalised specialist recovery programme provided by SSOPS is designed:

- to prevent further stroke, and

- help stroke survivors regain as much of the individual's physical and cognitive functioning as possible, to improve their quality of life.

All participants are individually assessed before entering the programme. They then follow personalised exercise regimes in classes of 5 people each week, which are focused, effortful, sustainable and closely supervised.

Not only does SSOPS help with physical rehabilitation, we are also building a community where people feel empowered and connected.

We have been very fortunate to be hosted by a local gym but are now ready to move to our own space. We have a generous offer for a fantastic space in Wellington's eastern suburbs and also have a generous package deal on essential equipment. Initial costs will be approximately $10,000 in order to become fully operational in our new location by end of February 2020.

As demand grows, we will then look to increase the number of classes and recruit more staff.

SSOPS Wellington is also just the beginning and we have big ambitions. Gym-based rehabilitation is a vital first step in stroke recovery, but neuroscience and rehab technology are fast evolving. New tools are being developed, which will soon be mainstream. Our Vision is to grow SSOPS to meet the increasing demand for comprehensive recovery programmes across the counrty, so that every stroke survivor can access the support they need.

We can achieve our goals with your support. Please help us to help others.

Use of funds

2 treadmills, 2 stationary bikes and an arm ergometer + shipping. If we cannot raise the full amount we will purchase one of each piece of equipment, or we will buy the most important pieces and continue fundraising.

Update  17 March 2020

2 weeks to go and as you can see we are a long way from our original target!

However! Jetts Fitness have come to the party and given us a lot of equipment including bikes and treadmills!! THANKS JETTS!!!

What we need now is some resistance equipment, weights, benches, kettle bells, bands etc.

I know this is a time when no one wants to be giving money. We are all unsure what is going to happen over the next weeks and months. But just the odd $10 here and there has got us half way to paying for our arm crank ergometer which gives our stroke survivors the opportunity to move their arm - something we can easily take for granted! And to improve their cardiovascular health and hence their chance of survival through times like this.

Please share this page around those you know who may have some interest in helping out and being part of this exciting journey.
