Christchurch, Canterbury
On the 16th of December, Surigao City, Province of Surigao del Norte, Caraga Region, Philippines, Northern tip of Mindanao. The super typhoon Rai “Odette” makes landfall in the Siargao Island of Surigao City this storm is one of the strongest storms of 2021 which had initially packed wind up to 260 kilometres per hour (160 miles per hour ) with gusts over300 kilometres per hour. This with the result communication network and power has been down in several parts of the region making rescue effort difficult with unable to determine the extent damage due to outage.
My home town in Surigao City has been severely affected by the typhoon 90% of their homes has been damaged and their livelihood. Currently, food, water and temporary shelter are major concerns as families struggle to survive and recover thousands of residents are curled up in evacuation centre. Power lines and communication may take months to be restored. While our community has been battling against the effect of Covid-19 the aftermath of the typhoon will surely bring greater poverty to our people.
“Gutom na po” means Hungry, starving thousands of residents call for help, I am knocking your heart to support my fellow Surigaonon any amount would help. The donation you make will likely reach in late December, giving them some glimpse of hope as new year begins.
Thank you so much for your kindness
