Hey everyone! Sorry for the delay in posting an update.
Ashen came home last Friday 🎉🎉🎉 he is still dealing with a few issues as a result of the meningitis and being in a coma, but they’re home ❤️
Sheena and Ants have been off work, and Sheena is now taking leave without pay, so this page is helping her do that!

Ashen has finally been medically cleared to fly home, with a few conditions 🎉
Sheena, Ants & Ashen can’t wait to be back on home soil.
It will still be awhile before either parent returns to work, so these funds have taken a huge amount of stress off them.
A huge thank you again for all your generosity, thoughts and prayers.

Hey everyone!
Ashen continues to improve, and the medical team are happy for him to leave the hospital for a few days before returning for a review 🎉🎉
He continues to have side effects from the meningitis, but is mobilising well and is very determined to get his strength back.
Ashens parents were able to give him a proper hug today for the first time since he became unwell!
We’re hoping that he’ll be medically cleared to fly home next week sometime 🤞

Day 11 update -
“Ashen continues to show improvement. His urinary catheter was removed today and no issues with urinating. His arterial line still hasn't been removed, the person that has to do it, is the Intensivist that looked after Ashen in the ICU. He is also the only Anaesthesiologist, so he is very busy. Awesome person too
Ashen did physio again today and was walking around with a walking frame. Ashen still gets light headed and dizzy when sitting up and standing, but said it is getting better”
Sheena’s Mum has been in Bali which has been so nice for all of them. Her Aunty also lives in Indonesia and has been visiting and helping with meals. It’s likely to be a while longer before everyone is home, but each day is another day closer ❤️
Thanks again for all your support! Accomodation and time off work has been a massive expense, let alone all the medical bills and we’re still unsure how much will be covered. Every little bit helps!

It has been a few days since I’ve posted an update, and things have been slowly but surely improving.
Ashen is still tiring easily, has tinnitus, and some residual brain swelling. He remains on IV antibiotics though a central line, but has now moved out of the ICU onto a ward 🎉🎉
Ashen has been working with physios to get some muscle strength back so that he will be able to stand on his own.. Unfortunately the travel insurance only approved a certain amount of physio sessions, so the family are paying for these themselves now (the funds from this page are so helpful for unexpected costs like this). Ashen is very determined to be able to stand and walk ❤️
We don’t know how much longer he’ll remain in Bali for; understandably flying with any brain swelling is a huge risk that no one wants to take!
Sheena and Ants are so grateful for all the love and support from everyone ❤️ each day is another day closer to getting their boy home!

Hey everyone! Huge news today - ASHEN IS AWAKE!!!
It’s still very early days, and he remains critical in the ICU, but the fact that he’s responsive is incredible. Ashen and his Whanau still have a way to go, but this is a huge step towards getting him back home to New Zealand. We’ve seen videos of him smiling, nodding and talking 🥹 Thank you again for all your support and generosity at this time ❤️ onto the next stage of his recovery!! 🤞🤞🤞
Day 5 Update from Ants & Sheena;
Just after 4pm today, the Intensivist stopped all the sedatives and attempted to wake Ashen from his coma. Ashen woke, but due to having been on 2 very powerful sedatives 24/7 for 5 days straight, he was constantly in and out of consciousness. I found it difficult to watch, as I couldnt tell if Ashens brain was functioning properly. His eyes kept rolling back into his head and he wasnt coherent. He wasnt doing anything the Intensivist was asking. He was not responding in any way. It was heart breaking as I watched the Intensivist try over and over again to try get a response. It felt like an eternity.
While he wasnt responding to commands, his body was showing signs that he was aware of things happening to him. Like reacting to the intubation tube down his throat and trying to remove it, which eventually lead to the tube being removed by the Intensivist.
After the tube was removed, he was still in and out of consciousness. Ashen was also trying to cough a lot because of the mucus in his chest from the pneumonia. The nurses used postural drainage, a technique that required tapping his back and chest to help loosen the mucus from his lungs. He tried to swat the nurses hand away, which was a promising sign of his awareness.
Ashen is continuing to show positive signs and we are allowing him to rest and will check tomorrow to see how he is and update tomorrow.

Mōrena! Firstly I just wanted to say the biggest THANK YOU for your generosity and kindness; Ants & Sheena are so overwhelmed by the funds that have been raised so far.
I thought I’d post an update on Ashen for those asking;
Ashen has bacterial meningitis caused by Streptaccocus Sius; He’s contracted this from undercooked pork. He is also fighting pneumonia, and has an upper GI bleed from a stomach ulcer.
Neurology have told the family that the brain swelling is severe, and it is too early to tell if this will cause permanent damage.
The next few days are critical, but he’s a strong dude, and is so wrapped in love, strength and prayers.
