Please help support Braxton and his family whilst he undergoes treatment for a brain tumour.
Otago
I would like you all to meet Braxton Rodwell. This very special 7 year old lives with his family in Balclutha; dad Mark, mum Shannon, sister Tamaralee and brother Cassius.
When Braxton was 1 ½ years old, he was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1); a genetic disorder that causes tumours to grow on nerve tissue. His first ever MRI showed a bilateral optic nerve glioma, which has affected his vision. Tumours such as these cannot be removed, so they must be closely monitored for changes with regular MRIs. Until recently, this have been relatively stable. Braxton was also diagnosed with epilepsy at a young age and has both learning disabilities and behavioural problems. Life for Braxton and his family has been rather complex and challenging to say the least.
Up until about October of last year, Braxton continued to find enjoyment in the things he liked; attending school, having fun in the playground and enjoying interacting with others. However in the months that followed, Braxton's headaches began to increase in frequency and severity and his vision deteriorated. Braxton was also losing weight and had become increasingly irritable and fatigued; sleeping more and not being his usual physically active self. On the 6th April, an MRI revealed a new mass in the hypothalamic region of Braxton's brain; a likely extension of his optic glioma. He was admitted to the Children's Haematology and Oncology Centre at Christchurch Hospital for further testing and review. With a clear indication of tumour progression, Braxton and his family have been advised that chemotherapy will provide him with his best shot at not only shrinking the tumour, but also stopping it from growing. Braxton's chemotherapy schedule will consist of weekly infusions for the next 17 months and will require regular travel to and from Dunedin Hospital.
Braxton's family are not without their own health issues. Braxton's dad Mark is also living with NF1. This coupled with a diagnosis of emphysema, continues to limit his ability to remain working and provide for his family. Braxton's mum Shannon has recently been diagnosed with epilepsy following a number of significant seizures. Consequently, Shannon is no longer able to drive.
Whilst the family remain optimistic and continue to look for that silver lining, the future is unknown. Braxton and his family have been through so much and will go through so much more in the months to come. The road ahead will not be easy but with your help, we can help ease the burden.
Braxton's mother is my cousin. Having gone through my own tragedy and hardship and seen and experienced firsthand the generosity of others, I want to be able to show that generosity - whether big or small - can truly make a difference to someone in need.
All funds raised will be used to support Braxton's needs and to support Braxton's family with travel expenses, accommodation, utilities and any unexpected bills that may ensue in the weeks and months ahead.
