Lionel’s family was forced out of NZ and is now trying to start a new life in Dubai—any support to help them start over would mean so much
Auckland
Last year, after more than six years of living, working, and paying taxes in New Zealand, Lionel and his family were forced to leave the country. Despite building a life here, their son Wade’s disability made them ineligible for residency or a work visa extension.
Lionel fought hard to overturn Immigration NZ’s decision, spending over $30,000 in legal fees—only to face repeated rejection.
Heartbreakingly, they had to leave behind their eldest son and 3-month-old grandchild, packing up their lives and exiting the country under immense stress. To make matters worse, Lionel wasn’t allowed to work in his final months in NZ, leaving the family with little income during a very costly time.
Now in Dubai, Lionel is trying to rebuild and provide for his family through real estate. But the financial burden is immense. With no visa yet approved for his wife, she cannot work, and they’re facing high costs from flights, nightly Airbnb stays (long-term rentals aren’t possible without a visa), and multiple visa and Emirates ID application fees.
Despite all this, Lionel remains hopeful and determined. I’ve helped where I can and will continue to support him, but if Lionel has ever helped you—or if you simply want to show some kindness—now is the time to lean in.
Every little bit will help them settle and build their new life in Dubai.
Thank you in advance for any support you can offer.
Lionel worked for me for nearly 5 years and has become a very close friend.
