A place where Madi’s friends, family and the Freeride community can wrap love and support around her.
Nationwide
On September 14th Madi was doing what she loves in the mountains skiing and competing in the New Zealand Junior Freeride competition at Mount Olympus when tragedy struck. A fall among rocks resulted in a serious spinal injury.
She was fortunate to be treated on the mountain by the amazing (and professional) Mount Olympus Ski Patrol and Doctor’s (there on the day), then flown to Christchurch Hospital by Rescue Helicopter where she had an operation to stabilise her broken spine. After 3 days in the ICU she has been transferred to Burwood Spinal Unit to start her long rehab journey.
Madi is a kind and enthusiastic 16-year-old who has a positive outlook on life, living life to the fullest whether it be in the mountains, playing sport and even in the classroom.
She now faces a long road ahead to gain back her mobility and independence with a minimum of a 3 month stay at the Burwood Spinal Unit in Christchurch. The long-term prognosis is unknown, and it will be a challenging journey, this fund will be used to give her every opportunity to fulfil her dreams to get back into the mountains and live her best life. Her family has relocated from Queenstown and Dunedin to Christchurch to support her during her rehabilitation.
Friends and part of the Freeride family
To give Madi every opportunity to fulfil her dreams to get back into the mountains and live her best life. Funds will be spent on any specific equipment to get her back into the mountains, on rehabilitation and therapy that will be required.
Funds will be paid to Madi's parents, Michelle and Richard.
THANK YOU 🙏 8 November 2024
A little update and a massive THANK YOU. Thank you for being a part of this Give a Little group that has now collected just over $30k to support Madi. Soooo great! The messages of support along with the donations have been a welcome comfort and huge encouragement to Madi and family. Madi is 7 weeks into rehab now with the goal of getting home to Arrowtown before Christmas. Visiting with Madi a couple of weeks ago and you can only be inspired by her dedication to rehab, her determination to work hard, the application of her intelligence to work with this challenge and her positive, cheeky spirit. Showing off her wheelchair wheelies with pride. Tough days and weeks for sure and bumps in the road to come but strongly supported by Michelle, Richard and Georgia their outlook is ALL about the things they CAN DO rather that what they can’t. Madi has been continuing her studies and this past week sat an NCEA level 2 exam and is busy planning her return to high school next year.
Thank you again for so generously donating, it really does make a difference.
