Dr Robert Makgill – Memorial Trust for Cosmos

On Dec 9th 2022, a star of environmental law passed away unexpectedly. Robert touched many people professionally and personally. A friend and colleague, Robert was passionate about his family, friends, the law and the environment - especially our maritime taonga. He was a big man in every way - generous, argumentative and loved an intellectual joust. He was a formidable litigator with a PhD and loved everything to do with the sea. Who can forget his puzzled frown, booming voice and cheeky laugh.

He was a son, a brother, father, surfer, dreamer and a lover of life. Most of all, he was a father to his beautiful child Cosmos.

The purpose of this “Givealittle” campaign is to raise funds to support Robert’s child Cosmos’ immediate welfare. Cosmos is just 16 and has lost a Dad, that he adored, just before Christmas and is in need of immediate financial support to assist with his care. The intention is to establish a Trust for Cosmos and transfer any funds raised here to allow these to be used for his welfare and hopefully provide support for education through college and university. Robert was a big believer in the power of education and lifelong learning. Providing the means for Cosmos to have the opportunity to pursue this is the most apt way we can think of to remember him.

We are hoping that together we can collectively provide the care and support to Cosmos – and provide the means for a brighter future at a time when Rob cannot. Let’s be as generous as we know he would be.
