To help ease the load on family of 9 as Dad undergoes gruelling treatment to try and beat Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia

Canterbury

On the 22nd of April 2019, Michael received the news that he has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. This was a huge shock as he’d simply gone into hospital with a migraine that wouldn’t subside. Michael and his fiancé, Lisa, have 7 young children between them (aged 6 - 15) so as you can imagine, this is a really tough time for all involved. Michael and Lisa have remained upbeat and positive throughout the treatment so far, and will remain so, however they are now approaching the hardest part of the journey. Michael is currently on his 3rd round of chemo and in the process of preparing for Total Body Irradiation (TBI) which will be followed by a Stem Cell Transplant (SCT), as unfortunately chemo alone can’t cure this.

Of course, there are big risks involved and they are very aware that Michael will remain in hospital for some time as his immunity will bottom out. Both Michael and Lisa’s employers have been very supportive throughout the journey and Michael has continued to do a few hours work each morning from his hospital bed, or home when he’s been well enough.

The next phase of treatment will mean he may be unable to do so, and likely mean Lisa will need to take more time off work to enable her to be there to support him as often as is practical. We are hoping to raise some funds to allow her to do so, and to assist with the additional travel costs, without them worrying about the financial stress.

Many friends have asked how they can help over the past few months but they have tried to get by as much as they can on their own. With the reality of what is to come over the next few months, they have come to realise that it is ok to ask for help. Any donation will be very gratefully received

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
