Support our special Kelson whānau

  • Update Part 2

      8 August 2023

On Wednesday she had surgery to remove the bone the tumour was in and her shoulder was reconstructed with metal. A 9 hr surgery! She is recovering well, better than the surgeon expected her to! In a few weeks time she will start chemotherapy again. This time it will be 12 rounds over 17 weeks. Still a long road ahead! It is hard being away from home and away from our support network but the team here at Christchurch Hospital have been amazing! Mia is being really positive and is determined to beat this! Much love Nicky x

  • 8th August 2023 update from Nicky PART 1

      8 August 2023

Kia ora e te whānau, I am absolutely blown away by your generous donations and kind messages. Thank you so much for making a difficult time a little easier, I will forever be grateful.

A little bit about Mia’s journey so far. Mia had a sore shoulder for a few months that we thought was just muscle pains from dancing. It wasn’t getting any better so on the 30th of April I took her to Hutt Hospital to have an x-ray. The doctors thought the same as we did and referred her to a physiotherapist. The next day I had a phone call from an orthopedic registrar to say he had looked at her x-ray and something looked suspicious in her shoulder. She had an MRI and CT Scan that showed a tumour in the bone of her shoulder and spots in her lungs. Within a few days Mia was sent to Christchurch Hospital for a biopsy. The results from this confirmed she had Osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer that had also spread to her lungs. Unfortunately the treatment can not be done in Wellington so Christchurch became our new home away from home! Treatment got underway pretty quickly. Over 10 weeks she had 6 rounds of chemotherapy.
