Please help support Melanie’s dachshund Penny’s unexpected surgical costs.
Christchurch, Canterbury
Kia ora, this page is set up on behalf of Melanie for her fur-baby Penny (aka Lady Penelope von Knockwurst, Pinny, Poophead, Panini), a 13-year-old mini dachshund who has recently become sick and needed several unexpected surgeries.
In the last 2 weeks Penny has become very sick. She had to have a number of teeth removed and drain a large pocket of infection that had eaten through her sinuses into the base of her canine. She healed well initially, but on Sunday evening started to show swelling around her left eye. It progressed very quickly, but luckily the incredible team at McMaster and Heap were able to see where she had more teeth removed (they turned out to be healthy) and sadly had to have her left eye removed. She had 2 abscesses behind her eye but these were able to be cleaned out completely once the eye was removed.
Penny has responded to treatment well, although is in pain and will have to adjust to only having one eye.
Unfortunately, in early 2022 her mum Melanie’s CFS/ME became severe. She is unable to work or leave the house much. During this incredibly difficult time Penny was the support that kept Melanie going as she came to terms with her new, diminished life, and her severely reduced means.
Penny is Melanie’s primary support, keeping her company when she is housebound, staving off loneliness and sadness. Any help, no matter how small, you can provide will help Melanie stay afloat.

The cost of these treatments and repeated vet visits has been huge.
For the first surgery $1,300 plus numerous follow up visits and meds.
For the eye removal surgery $4,400 plus follow up visits and meds.
Free of infection!!! 23 October 2025
Hopefully final update of the "Pus-head Saga". Last visit with the incredible Dr Steve at McMaster & Heap Veterinary Practice. Now that Penny is better she is back to her fully bratty self. We were meant to have a quick visit to remove her sutures and check all the things. But noiioiooooo. Penny is done with everyone picking, poking and prodding at her head so required light sedation to remove the sutures. Of course. Steve repeatedly called her a tiger and I was very much thinking "I told you so". So apart from incurring one last hit to the bank account she has a clean bill of health, a bald head (which is so lovely to kiss, I can see why people like Chinese Crested dogs now) and an incredibly well done empty socket. Sorry I've been so quiet for the last week. Honestly I've been just resting as much as I can after all the stress. Thank you so much to everyone who's comment, liked, msged, donated and just generally been here for me. It's really easy to feel isolated when you are sick all the time, but I have felt so cared for in these past few weeks. Thank you all.
