A crowdfunding appeal to help The Blackhouse 106.1FM raise funds for much needed laptop to continue amplifying African diaspora voices.
Wellington
For over two decades, Liya, producer of The Blackhouse 106.1FM, has been a dedicated advocate, supporting justice, mental health, and housing needs. Growing up in Aotearoa without community support, she understands how vital it is to create spaces for connection and belonging. The Blackhouse, a grassroots and organic initiative, amplifies the voices of the African and Black diaspora in New Zealand, giving a platform for stories, issues, artists, and entrepreneurship often overlooked.
In 2024, The Blackhouse was a finalist at the NZ Radio & Podcast Awards, with Liya’s voice featured in the ceremony’s introduction—a testament to the impact of this unfunded, community-driven project. The Blackhouse continues to showcase local talent, promote events, and support community initiatives, including raising over $25,000 last year for the family of Luke Smith. RIP
Currently, The Blackhouse faces a MAJOR challenge. The laptop used for video editing and graphic design crashed in August 2024, leaving Liya to improvise with her phone—a solution that is neither sustainable nor effective. After researching capacity technology, a laptop with the required specs will cost $3,000-$3,500.
This campaign aims to raise the funds needed for this essential equipment, plus the Givealittle charge of 5% (including GST) enabling The Blackhouse to keep growing, improving, creating, and celebrating our community. Your contribution, big or small, will make a difference in continuing this meaningful work

The Power of Podcasting & Why the Right Tools Matter 9 March 2025
Podcasting is more than just audio—it's storytelling, connection, and community. It amplifies voices that often go unheard, preserves cultural narratives, and sparks conversations that matter. In a world where mainstream media doesn't always reflect diverse perspectives, podcasts provide a platform for authenticity, education, and change. But to do it well, the right tools are essential. Quality production makes a difference in how stories are received and shared. A fit-for-purpose laptop, reliable editing software, and strong broadcasting equipment aren't just conveniences—they’re the backbone of creating content that engages, informs, and inspires. Without them, valuable stories get lost in technical limitations. On The Blackhouse, we’re committed to uplifting African and Black diaspora communities in Aotearoa through our platform. But producing high-quality content while under-resourced has been a constant challenge. That’s why we’re fundraising for a laptop that can handle the demands of editing, graphics, and video processing—so we can keep telling our stories that matter, in the way they deserve to be heard. Your support helps ensure that these voices continue to reach the people who need to hear them. Go and check out our YT Blackhouse Channel:
