Support The Blackhouse to get vital laptop

$2,000 of $4,500 goal
Given by 11 generous donors in around 5 months

A crowdfunding appeal to help The Blackhouse 106.1FM raise funds for much needed laptop to continue amplifying African diaspora voices.

Wellington

The Blackhouse 106.1FM is a grassroots initiative amplifying the voices of the African and Black diaspora in Aotearoa—highlighting our stories, artists, issues, and entrepreneurs too often overlooked.

At its core is Liya, the Producer and Coordinator of a fluid team of nine. With over two decades of voluntary advocacy work behind her—spanning youth, women’s rights, justice, mental health, and housing—Liya brings not only experience but creative passion. She leads the project’s graphic design, video editing, and coordination with heart and vision.

Since launching in 2020, The Blackhouse has grown into a vibrant platform, named a 2024 finalist at the NZ Radio & Podcast Awards. From spotlighting local talent to raising over $25,000 for Luke Smith’s family (RIP), we’re committed to uplifting our people.

In August 2024, our editing laptop crashed, leaving Liya to manage hours of video content using only her phone—an unsustainable workaround. A fit-for-purpose laptop, crucial for podcast and content production, is estimated at $3,000–$4,500. (Latest quotes 03042025)

This campaign will fund this essential tool, plus cover Givealittle’s 5% fee. Your support—big or small—will help us continue building, creating, and celebrating our community with the quality it deserves.

Asante sana.

Thank You – We’ve Reached $2,000! 💛🎙️  21 June 2025

To everyone who donated, shared, and supported our campaign — thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We’ve officially reached $2,000 through our Givealittle fundraiser, and while we didn’t hit our minimum goal of $3,500, this is still a huge step forward.

Every dollar raised brings us closer to securing a fit-for-purpose production laptop, which is vital for editing our podcast content, producing video, and getting The Blackhouse fully back in the creative game.

Your generosity has reminded us just how much community power there is behind this kaupapa. We’re now actively exploring ways to cover the shortfall and make sure we can get the right equipment to meet the growing needs of our work.

Being adequately resourced isn’t about having the flashest gear — it’s about having the right tools to bring our full vision to life. A proper production setup means we can amplify the stories that matter, document our communities with care, and contribute to the media landscape with depth, pride, and consistency.

This project has always been grassroots, community-led, and powered by love. Your support keeps that spirit alive — and we don’t take that for granted.

Ngā mihi nui,

The Blackhouse 106.1FM Team
