Support The Blackhouse to get vital laptop

  • Thank You – We’ve Reached $2,000! 💛🎙️

      21 June 2025

To everyone who donated, shared, and supported our campaign — thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We’ve officially reached $2,000 through our Givealittle fundraiser, and while we didn’t hit our minimum goal of $3,500, this is still a huge step forward.

Every dollar raised brings us closer to securing a fit-for-purpose production laptop, which is vital for editing our podcast content, producing video, and getting The Blackhouse fully back in the creative game.

Your generosity has reminded us just how much community power there is behind this kaupapa. We’re now actively exploring ways to cover the shortfall and make sure we can get the right equipment to meet the growing needs of our work.

Being adequately resourced isn’t about having the flashest gear — it’s about having the right tools to bring our full vision to life. A proper production setup means we can amplify the stories that matter, document our communities with care, and contribute to the media landscape with depth, pride, and consistency.

This project has always been grassroots, community-led, and powered by love. Your support keeps that spirit alive — and we don’t take that for granted.

    Ngā mihi nui,

    The Blackhouse 106.1FM Team

  • Only 4 Days Left – Help Us Reach Our Goal! 🎙️💻

      16 June 2025

13th June marked The Blackhouse 106.1FM’s 5th birthday on air! Five years of amplifying community voices, stories, artistry and issues from African-NZ and Black diaspora in Aotearoa — and we’re just getting started.

To celebrate, we’ve shared our latest live session with the incredible cast and crew of Gates to Memory from this year’s Kia Mau Festival:

This is the kind of kaupapa-driven content we love to create — but right now, we’re still under-resourced. Without a dedicated production laptop, our podcasting and digital presentation is challenged.

We have only 4 days left in our Givealittle fundraiser, and have raised $1,370 so far.

We still need your help to reach our target and get the fit for purpose tools we need to grow and sustain this mahi.

Please support and share — every dollar counts, and this one piece of equipment will make a huge difference. Also, while you are checking out the video below, go have a look at the rest of our channels content, from the early days of only audio content to being able to film & go to live for Youtube. We have constantly been learning and developing. Please like, subscribe, comment, as this helps us to become more visible & algorithms do count in so many ways.

  • Last leg of the journey

Thank you for sticking with us — your support means so much. We’re in the final stretch of this campaign and wanted to share a quick behind-the-scenes look at our studio setup during a recent interview.

Right now, we’re running live to YouTube and capturing extra footage — but without a proper production laptop, we can’t edit or upload most of our content.

Once we reach our goal, we’ll be able to bring all this amazing footage to life and share more on our YouTube channel.

Please keep sharing — every bit of support helps us get there! You can Find more on our photo uploads (this one only lets us upload one per update) 😁

  • We have extended the Givealittle

      12 May 2025

We’ve extended our Givealittle campaign by another month to give ourselves a better chance of reaching the goal. The reality is, fundraising takes time — especially in a tough economic climate — and we’re committed to doing this transparently and without pressure.

Every contribution, share, or word of encouragement helps us get closer to securing the equipment we need to lift the quality and consistency of The Blackhouse 106.1FM. This podcast matters to our community, and we want to give it the tools it deserves to grow.

Thanks for sticking with us — we’re not giving up.

  • Why we still need your help - part 2

      12 May 2025

Continued: From reaching the finals of the NZ Radio & Podcast Awards 2024 to being syndicated, we’ve proven our impact. But we can’t keep building if we don’t have the right tools. We are not giving up and are still applying for funding, but to date, have not secured the required amount for this equipment.

We’ve continue to have sit-downs, send proposals, approached local funders and suppliers. Still, podcasting despite its growing influence and power to connect - is not yet fully realised where it counts. Access to credit & loans is simply not an option.

This campaign is our only path forward.

So we’re asking all of you —if The Blackhouse has ever uplifted your voice, promoted your event, supported your journey, or given you space, please consider paying it forward. The Blackhouse is the authentic diaspora voice of Aotearoa. The Blackhouse is our house—and right now, we need your help to keep it standing. Every contribution makes a real difference.

    Thankyou

  • Why We still Urgently Need Your Help

      12 May 2025

First, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has donated so far—your support has carried us. Between January and April, we’ve raised $1,200 through our Givealittle campaign for a fit-for-purpose laptop. We’re truly grateful. But we’re only halfway to our minimum goal, and the need remains urgent. This laptop is not a luxury item—it’s essential infrastructure for The Blackhouse 106.1FM. Without it, we can’t edit, process, or publish the content we create. Right now, we’re sitting on hours of unedited video and audio footage that we physically cannot work with due to hardware limitations. We also can’t outsource this work—we simply don’t have the funds. To meet the demands of editing long-form (1-hour+) video and audio content, and to create quality graphics for the podcast side of the show, we need a device with industry standard specifications. As a community-led show, we’ve continued to punch above our weight. (to be continued)

  • Goal Update – Thank You for Getting Us This Far!

      17 April 2025

We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported our Givealittle campaign — thanks to you, we’ve reached $1,220! Your generosity is helping us get closer to purchasing a fit-for-purpose laptop for editing, design, and running The Blackhouse 106.1FM.

We’ve also got exciting news: we’ve been syndicated! To Planet FM Auckland, Free FM Hamilton, Plains FM Christchurch & OAR FM Dunedin. Our show is now being shared nationwide, extending the reach of voices, stories, and music from the African and Black diaspora in Aotearoa. This is a major milestone for our community-led kaupapa.

As we continue gathering updated quotes, it's clear our original goal of $3,500 was an underestimation. Prices have increased, and for the specs we need — including a one-time Office 2024 Suite (Excel & Word, no subscriptions) and strong virus protection — the realistic cost now sits between $3,500 and $4,500.

We’re still hunting for the best deals, specials, while ensuring the tech meets the needs of our growing production, plus the 5% Givealittle fee.

Thank you again to everyone who’s donated, shared, or simply cheered us on. Your support means everything to us and to the communities we represent. Please keep sharing the campaign so we can reach our goal and grow this kaupapa together.

  • We’ve hit $1,000+ and we’re just getting started!

We’ve hit the $1,000 mark—thank you to all our generous donors! Your support is helping us get closer to a fit-for-purpose laptop, essential for managing our growing video podcast content. With hours of unreleased footage and weekly live material, we’re working hard to produce polished edits, teasers, and shorts that reflect the vibrant energy of our show.

March saw us launch the Afro Urban Soundstage at Newtown Festival, featuring 16-year-old Haitian-Kiwi artist ImaniJ in her first-ever festival set, supported by DJ Anansi. Our DJs were also invited to spin at Radio Active’s Jewel School—massive props to them!

Behind the scenes, it's been nonstop with content production, admin, and community collabs. And the big news? We’ve just been syndicated to Planet FM, Free FM, and Plains FM! The Blackhouse is now broadcasting across Aotearoa, creating more space for African and Black voices. We’re just getting started!🚀

Pictures from The Blackhouse AfroUrban Soundstage will be up soon

  • The Power of Podcasting & Why the Right Tools Matter

      9 March 2025
    Main image

Podcasting is more than just audio—it's storytelling, connection, and community. It amplifies voices that often go unheard, preserves cultural narratives, and sparks conversations that matter. In a world where mainstream media doesn't always reflect diverse perspectives, podcasts provide a platform for authenticity, education, and change. But to do it well, the right tools are essential. Quality production makes a difference in how stories are received and shared. A fit-for-purpose laptop, reliable editing software, and strong broadcasting equipment aren't just conveniences—they’re the backbone of creating content that engages, informs, and inspires. Without them, valuable stories get lost in technical limitations. On The Blackhouse, we’re committed to uplifting African and Black diaspora communities in Aotearoa through our platform. But producing high-quality content while under-resourced has been a constant challenge. That’s why we’re fundraising for a laptop that can handle the demands of editing, graphics, and video processing—so we can keep telling our stories that matter, in the way they deserve to be heard. Your support helps ensure that these voices continue to reach the people who need to hear them. Go and check out our YT Blackhouse Channel:

  • UPDATE

      5 March 2025
    Main image

Kia ora & thank you to everyone who has supported us so far!

Apologies for not being more active here—we’ve been deep in the work, keeping The Blackhouse 106.1FM running and holding space for African & Black voices in Aotearoa.

The Blackhouse isn’t just a radio show; it’s a movement. It’s about authenticity, representation, and legacy—making sure our stories are told by us, for us, and ensuring that our youth growing up in Aotearoa see themselves reflected in media, culture, and history.

We need a fit-for-purpose laptop to edit and share the videos we’ve been capturing—interviews, discussions, and music sessions showcasing our community’s depth and talent. It’s a basic tool, yet securing the resources to get it has been harder than expected. No one can build a house with a spoon—however we are struggling to do our work without having right equipment?

If you believe in authentic storytelling, please support us. Watch our videos, engage with our content, and help us keep this unique platform alive. Also a laptop will mean we can edit our in studio film & incorporating different camera angles, & lift our presentation standard. Please support us to continue & more updates coming🙏🏾

  • Why might you want to Support The Blackhouse?

      23 January 2025

1.Amplifying Marginalized Voices: The Blackhouse creates a platform for African and Black diaspora communities in New Zealand whose stories and contributions are often overlooked. Supporting this ensures these voices continue to be heard.

    2. Grassroots Effort: The Blackhouse is entirely community-driven and has grown organically. Every achievement, from award nominations to community campaigns, has been built from the ground up.

    3. Proven Impact: The Blackhouse has already made a tangible difference, providing exposure for local artists and businesses, and fostering connections within the community.

    4. Recognition Despite Challenges: Despite limited resources, The Blackhouse was a finalist in the NZ Radio & Podcast Awards, showing its value and potential even in tough circumstances.

    5. Commitment and Barriers: As someone who is neurodiverse and lives with a disability, Liya has faced significant employment challenges but remains committed to community work, that has purpose.

    6. Sustaining Quality Content: A new laptop is vital to maintaining the quality of video editing, graphic design, and online presence. Without it, it becomes unsustainable.

    7. Strengthening Community Connections: By supporting The Blackhouse, you help sustain a space that celebrates culture, fosters belonging, and builds bridges within New Zealand’s diverse communities.

    8. Making a Difference: Every contribution helps keep this important work going, ensuring the Blackhouse continues to empower others.
