Help Me Represent NZ in Volleyball

  • Junior Volleyball Coach

      1 July 2015

I have had a minor set back for about 3 weeks but all is back on track now. To help with my progress, myself and a friend has taken a coaching role up at our school to coach our year 9 junior volleyball team. This has helped me keep abit of my fitness up and also practicing my volleyball with the team. It has helped me go back to the basics and to really practice them. I am enjoying coaching and hope the boys are too.

  • Volleyball session 2 with Des Kerekere

The weekend gone we had another training session with Des Kere Kere. He offered his services again and we had no hesitation to accept. He travels from Porirua to Whakatane to do these coaching clinics. Saturday started off with just a few of us rep boys which was really cool. Des had spoken to our NZ coach prior to coming to Whakatane on what he could work on us individually. Des taught me a lot of exercises to strengthen my hands and fingers as I am a setter. We worked on foot work and positioning of my feet while setting. He also taught me how to read the play of the game and to think quick during a game. I also got some tips off the other boys individual coaching which I think will help my game as well. I am very keen to use these skills this weekend as we travel to Hamilton to play in the Northern Zone Volleyball Competition.

  • Midlands - Northern Zone

      10 June 2015

So we have started round 2 in the Northern Zone Competition. The day started off with a win by default due to North Harbour unable to field a team. Fortunately Tauranga was able to rally a team up to play us. We had a very slow start and took us awhile to get our mojo. Unfortunately we couldn't peg it back and lost 3-1. Its a really hard competition to the normal secondary competition I am use to but just being on the court and using the time to practice to improve my game is what I am aiming for. This game I used to practice on my serving and in particular, serving in the different zones. Playing in different positions was a nice change of play for my game as well. My 2nd game was against Auckland Central where they had beaten us 3-0. Again using the court time to improve my game was my main focus. Fortnights time we travel to Hamilton.

  • Volleyball session with Volleyball NZ Ref Des Kerekere

I was fortunate enough to participate in a referring course with one of NZ's top Volleyball Referee last weekend. I think to have a good understanding of the game you need to be able to learn how to referee the game. Knowing the rules and all will definitely help my game. After a 3 hour course on referring Des Kere Kere was kind enough to take a 2 day training session. Opportunities like this rarely come by in the Whakatane area for this sport so it was very much appreciated. We learnt heaps of different skills which will definitely help my game. We will be having another training session in June so will definitely take that opportunity as well. Mean while in between I have been keeping my fitness up and going to the gym after school 5 times a week and grab an opportunity in our school gym when its free.
