An opportunity to give back to someone who has spent years helping, mentoring and bringing people together.
Wellington
Many people know Bari through dance, where he introduced Kizomba to New Zealand and helped build a thriving community. Others know him as a colleague, mentor, friend, problem-solver, advocate, or simply someone who is always willing to lend a hand.
On 18 June 2026, after becoming unexpectedly breathless while teaching, Bari was admitted to Wellington Hospital and diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. He began chemotherapy on 23 June 2026 and is now focusing on treatment and recovery.
For years, Bari has generously given his time, energy and knowledge to others. He has mentored teachers and organisers and introduced countless people to dance, brought international artists to NZ and created spaces where many of us found friendship, confidence and a sense of belonging.
Those who know Bari know that he is passionate, principled and fiercely protective of his community. While this fundraiser won't change the medical outcome, we have a chance to show our appreciation and help ease some of the practical pressures that come with months of treatment and remind Bari that he doesn't have to carry everything on his own.
If Bari has touched your life through dance, friendship, teaching or simply being himself, please consider donating or sharing this page.
Thank you for supporting someone who has given so much to so many.
I have known Bari since 2018 as a close friend and mentor. He is one of the people I trust most, and I am deeply grateful for the friendship, guidance and support he has given me and so many others over the years.
Funds will help ease the practical and personal costs associated with Bari's treatment and recovery, including time off work and maintaining comfort during a prolonged hospital stay.
