Supporting Nick Destounis and Whānau Rebuild After Losing Everything

On Tuesday, 23 June 2026, Nick Destounis and his whānau lost everything in a devastating house fire.

The fire destroyed two family homes—Nick's home, and the downstairs home where his daughter, her partner, and their tamariki lived. Thankfully, everyone escaped safely, but they were left with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. Family photographs, treasured keepsakes, children's belongings, furniture, household items, and all the everyday essentials that make a home have been lost.

Anyone who knows Nick knows he is not someone who asks for help. For many years, he has quietly given back to others through koha of kai, supporting community events and fundraisers, helping local whānau, and backing businesses throughout Tairāwhiti region, and beyond. His generosity has always come from the heart, never seeking recognition.

We are asking friends, whānau, local businesses, and anyone who is able to help them rebuild their lives. Donations will assist with immediate essentials including clothing, food, temporary accommodation, furniture, bedding, household items, and the many unexpected costs of starting again.

No financial support is being provided to assist with costs for Nick and his whānau to rebuild after the fire.
