Many in the Devonport community know Sam as the friendly, familiar, kind soul who is always on hand to help with your trolley at New World.
Devonport, Auckland
Sadly, Sam’s world was shattered on 21st April with the heartbreaking passing of his beloved soulmate Yumi.
In March, Yumi began experiencing stomach cramps and, shortly after, was devastatingly diagnosed with stage four advanced pelvic cancer affecting her ovaries and uterus. Sadly, she was not eligible for chemo, and her health declined rapidly. Throughout her illness, Sam remained by her side every day, providing unwavering love and support during her time in hospital.
Sam and Yumi were married for 16 years after meeting in NZ while Yumi was studying English. Their love story crossed borders—when Yumi returned to Japan, Sam followed her and proposed. They lived together in Japan before returning to NZ, where they continued their life side by side. Yumi was his rock.
Sam’s employer, New World, has been incredibly supportive and compassionate in allowing him the time he needed to be with Yumi as her health deteriorated. Yumi's employer however, has not been so understanding. After 7 years of loyal service, they stopped paying her within days of her becoming unwell, adding significant financial strain during an already overwhelming time.
Sam is now grieving the loss of his soulmate while also supporting himself and Yumi’s parents, who have travelled from Japan and planned to stay for approximately six weeks to say goodbye to their daughter. With Yumi’s income gone, Sam has been left struggling to manage household costs and the unexpected expenses that come with her passing.
I am a local friend of Sam and the late Yumi.
Contributions will help Sam cover funeral costs and ease the financial burden he is facing during this incredibly difficult time, allowing him to grieve without the added stress of immediate financial pressure. Any support is deeply appreciated by Sam.
