Just a quick update to again thank everyone for their emotional and financial support for Bettyanne and Dakota at this time. They have returned to Auckland with Keith's remains, and are now connecting with friends and colleagues, and laying plans for the weeks and months ahead. They hope to organise a proper wake for Keith ("George Keith Crawford") when the time feels right to get together to celebrate his life and all he brought to those that knew him.

Keith was cremated yesterday and all going well his ashes will be returned to them before midday today as Government Departments etc close early on Fridays. (Keith would have appreciated that!). All going to plan Bettyanne and Dakota, with Keith's ashes, will be on a flight back to NZ tomorrow.

  • Bettyanne and Dakota preparing for Keith's cremation most likely on Wednesday

      12 December 2023

Bettyanne and Dakota want to thank everyone for the words of comfort and remembrance, and for the financial support.  Yesterday they were able to visit and spend time with Keith in the Bourail mortuary which is located next to a school playground.  Bettayanne relayed that he "looked fresh faced and asleep" and that they could hear the school kids running about and laughing outside which lifted their spirits.  She also recounted that "in true Keith style we were driven there by a local but still managed to get lost on the way. Something to smile about and felt so fitting."

No one can be prepared for something like this - the procedures in Nouvelle Calendonie have required them to provide Keith's birth certificate, their marriage certificate, a shared utility bill and so on - not the kind of documentation anyone takes on a 5 day pacific island break! At the moment if all the conditions are able to be met today, Keith's body will be moved to the city of Noumea early tomorrow morning (Wed 13th) where it will be cremated.  His remains will then be placed in an urn and sealed by the police ready to be transported home in the plane with Bettyanne and Dakota.  The earliest they will be able to fly back to New Zealand, all going well, is Friday.

Posting one of the last photos taken of Keith, relaxing at their hotel, head in a book, the day before he died.
