Support the Summer Family while 9year old Kip battles C.I.D.P ( Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy).
Whitianga, Waikato
In September,Kip (9yrs) was admitted to Waikato Hospital after gradually losing mobility of his legs. He was initially diagnosed with Gullian Barre Syndrome. However, over the next month he returned to Waikato 2 more times with his condition worsening. At the last visit he was wheelchair bound with mobility loss in his legs and hands and respiratory weakness.
He was transferred to Starship. After further tests he was diagnosed with C.I.D.P ( Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy) an auto immune condition that attacks the periphial nerves. Kip was treated with steroids and immunoglobulin infusions and has responded well, but the prognosis is still unclear as it’s unknown how much damage has been caused to the nerves.
This is a massive adjustment for the Summers due to the unpredictability of the situation.
They are currently still at Starship. Kip will be discharged to a rehab where he will be (With Gem and brother Raffi, while Possum returns to work) until Kip is strong enough to return home. Kip will need ongoing (6 weekly) IVIG and steroid treatments for at least a year.
The Summer family are also using alternative treatment for Kip, alongside medical help.
Before this, Kip was a HUGELY active boy, who lived for skateboarding, biking and bush survival. He has a huge love for nature so the mental and physical change for Kip has been tough.
This has been a horrific time for the Summers in many ways but we, their village can help to ease the financial strain.
Gemma (Kip's mother) is a dear friend of mine. We have navigated parenthood together with our kids close in age. We first met in Waikato hospital as we became mothers only 12 hours apart almost 10 years ago. We are now celebrating Kips first steps all over again.
The money will go directly to the Summer Family to cover travel expenses to and from hospital, time off work, and other expenses that arise from an unexpected and lengthy hospital stay.
Thank you ❤️ 27 November 2024
Hey everyone,
We have been staying at a children rehabilitation centre in Auckland for the past (nearly) 5 weeks and this coming Friday we will be returning home.
I'm happy to say that Kip is doing so well! From the moment we arrived here he has been dedicated to his physio sessions and had such a great attitude towards his recovery. We are very proud of the effort he has put in every day! He is no longer needing to use a wheelchair at all!
While he still has some challenges to work on, he continues to make a steady amount of improvement and gains each day. Raffi has stayed with Kip and myself for majority of the time and been a little superstar by his side.
Our family is so so grateful for all the support and messages we have received. Because of this page we had more family support during our time in hospital, we have been able to stay at the rehab facility for as long as Kip has needed to, and access additional help, all which we know has contributed immensely and will continue to help with his recovery. We are so appreciative of every single person that has helped us on this journey. Thank you, thank you, thank you...
See you all soon xx
