Peacock family left without a home & $1000's out of pocket....due to poor building practices, by a local building franchise.
Canterbury
Sarah, Steve, 15 year old Brooke & 7 year old Hunter, through no fault of their own are living in a make shift home comprising of an old weathered caravan that leaks in harsh weather, with a 3x3m lean-to tin shed that extends their living space.
A poorly laid foundation by an unlicensed builder is the contributing factor to this families continued struggle. Due to their limited funds the family had employed the owner of the kitset franchise to plan & build their home, for council compliance the company owner, as he was unlicensed, needed to work under supervision from a LBP. However, taking matters into his own hands...we can only presume to save himself money, decided to complete the work independently without the families knowledge. Consequently, his lack of expertise has left the family with a crumbling & out of align foundation that has exposed chairs, mesh & rods. The council have dutifully failed the foundation, preventing further building progress.
Currently, Sarah, Steve, Brooke & Hunter, face an endless battle that started two years ago through lawyers, for some compensation. The process taking longer than anticipated, due to the franchise owner being uncooperative & hard to locate. Leaves their kitset home which was delivered at the same time the slab was laid, lying tied to the broken slab to be battered by the harsh weather conditions, some of the parts have been damaged & others lost.
Two years is a long time to endure the financial, emotional & physical stress placed upon them & with no light at the end of the tunnel, they are starting to lose faith.
Their current living conditions offer them some protection from the elements, but gale force Nor'wester winds that are prevalent in North Canterbury, often force the family to evacuate their make shift home in the early hours & sit in their car in the middle of a paddock, as the caravan becomes dangerous in the high winds due to its instability, with the potential to uplift. Also with the threat of yet another cold winter fast approaching, the family are once again dreading living in a damp & cold environment that seriously impacts on their physical & emotional health. The simple things in life that we all take for granted, e.g. birthday parties at home, friends for dinner, kids sleepovers, personal space & the basic home amenities are sorely missed by Sarah, Steve, 15 year old Brooke & 7 year old Hunter. Let's help them build the foundation for their home!
As a new family to the community, we met Sarah & Steve at the local school, as conversations around managing our lifestyle block evolved they were always willing to help. Giving up many weekends to help & support us while we picked up the skills required i.e. fencing & animal welfare. Since then we have become good friends, during which time I discovered their unfortunate situation & was inspired to help them.
