Over 1000 people are still in evacuation centers and they need our support. We can stand in solidarity for the people of Fiji!!
Auckland
During the Easter weekend, the Northwestern part of Fiji got struck by Tropical Cyclone Josie really bad.
While many may think it was only a Category 1 Cyclone, the flooded waters affected many of the villages and towns in the western division!! To date, power and water are yet to be restored in many communities and relief workers are doing all they can to reach rural communities that have been affected!!
This fundraiser is to aid families that have been affected, particularly those that are still in evacuation centers. I know many families are struggling with supplies and their kids would not have stationary and food!! The situation report flags that many people are in need of help as they prepare for another low pressure heading their way (expected to develop into a cyclone by Sunday 😞 😞 ) There are over 1000 families that are still in Evacuation Centers and we can help out in whatever capacity we can.
I am going down with a few other volunteers that are going down and I will personally visit these communities as they are in my province that I grew up in. These communities were also home to many researchers during our field visit last summer.
The University of Auckland pacific students association and my development studies program is also assisting in the course as we are sending some boxes today.
I am a Pacific Island Student studying at the University of Auckland. Over Easter, the people of Fiji were severely affected by the tropical cyclone Josie. In light of the many cyclones they have experienced over years and resilience that they have built, many communities still have nothing to start off their own lives again. I feel for my people and it is my calling to help them!! So standing in solidarity with the survivors, I would do my best to help my people.
All funds collected will be used to help flood victims rebuild their homes. Volunteers will assist in the rebuilding process. For flood victims that are still in evacuation homes, goods and immediate supplies (such as school stationary) will be bought!!
