Raising funds for Marlborough Boys' College Aquabots Team Orca to compete in the international SeaPerch competition in America in May 2025.
Blenheim, Marlborough
Kia ora!
Meet Team Orca: Sam Molony, Tāna Barron and Luke Bourgeois, all Year 10 students from Marlborough Boys' College.
Their Aquabot team has been invited to compete at the annual international SeaPerch competition in Maryland, USA in May 2025.
An Aquabot is an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The boys build and design their own Aquabot and test it in water in environmentally-themed challenges against other teams from around the world.
Having already competed in the regional and national Aquabot competitions to qualify for the world event, the boys have worked very hard to get this far.
They are excited about being selected to attend SeaPerch, which will open their eyes to a whole new level of technology and learning to bring back to New Zealand and share with others.
These valuable skills include engineering concepts and problem-solving, scientific communication, and technical applications. They also learn basic skills in science, electrical concepts and design, and are encouraged to explore naval architecture and marine and ocean engineering principles.
The cost for Team Orca to travel and compete is around $40,000 - which is why we are reaching out to fellow Kiwis to support our boys.
When the boys aren't modifying their Aquabot and training to use it, they are fundraising by cooking sausages, selling raffle tickets and bagging firewood, among other things.
Thank you Aotearoa!
Parent of one of the team members. Suzanne is the parent of another team member and is managing the finances.
The money will be spent on competition fees, flights and accommodation. The total estimated cost is almost $40,000
Thank you! 28 February 2025
