The Adventures of Harlow: A Warriors Story

  • Update on Harlow

The journey of having a child with leukemia is truly a rollercoaster—a whirlwind of highs and lows, twists and turns, and moments that either crawl by or race ahead too quickly to process.

Yesterday, Harlow underwent anesthesia for another round of chemotherapy administered directly into her spine. The original plan had been for chemotherapy through her port on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this week.

However, those appointments have been cancelled. Next week, Meonday’s visit will now focus on blood tests in preparation for her next spinal chemotherapy on Tuesday.

At home, Harlow continues to bravely take oral chemotherapy every day.

The family has learned to adapt to these shifts. They understand that changes like this are not the fault of an overburdened doctor caring for a fully occupied ward. It's heartbreaking to consider how many Kiwi families are dealing with childhood cancer.

Despite these challenges, the family remains deeply humbled by the generosity and support of friends, family, and the wider community. Your ongoing kindness and care mean the world to them—thank you.

Harlow's face and body are swollen from the effects of steroids and chemotherapy. She is absolutely gorgeous, but the side effects are very noticeable. Her hair is now starting to fall out.

She has another big week ahead of her with dressing changes, chemotherapy and surgery scheduled.

Today Harlow had her regular Thursday appointment for chemotherapy. Unfortunately bugs are going around her siblings school and have reached the family home. A simple temperature can become a massive problem during cancer treatment. They're having to constantly check her temperature after it peaked today. Almost causing a hospital admission during chemotherapy treatment. The doctor says a viral bug is brewing. Please send good thoughts her way that we have a weekend without hospital admission. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this give a little. I know the family appreciate your generosity. Words cannot express how much

    Yesterday was Hard!

Harlow was getting a different kind of treatment (pegaspargase) and she had an allergic reaction. They did warn that it might happen but she needed an adrenaline shot and some salbutamol to help her breathing. The nurses and doctors handled it so well and reassured the family the whole time.

Thank you so much to everyone who is following our journey, and the community we have rallying around us, your support is so appreciated!

Today was a better day, we had the allergy friendly version of treatment today, my nerves were all over the place waiting for this to happen! That was quickly eased once treatment started and Harlow had no reaction. Today she also had the plaster on her PICC line changed, this definitely wasn't fun for her but she handled it amazingly. We are feeling very tired today so ready for a much needed sleep 🤞🤞
