The Deadly Grip of Motor Neuron Disease

Motor Neurone Disease is a cruelly debilitating disease and any support gathered to help out this family would be greatly appreciated.

Hawke's Bay

Two years ago Russell was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), having already survived cancer and a double heart bypass (both hereditary) in the past 10 years. MND prognosis was a major shock as there is no possibility of a cure. Russell has always been fit and active and at his most comfortable working outside on the land. As you can imagine this diagnosis was shattering for Russell, Noeleen and the boys, but now is the time to rally some help for them before time runs out.

Russell has always been a hands on handy man and done what is needed around the home but now unfortunately his motor skills and fatigue are letting him down and just getting dressed is a huge effort. Russell is concerned he has run out of time to do the one thing that he will shortly need and that is an accessible bathroom. This will enable Russell to keep his independence for as long as possible.

When you really have nothing else to do but sit around and think (MND takes away your abilities to move, eat, drink and eventually breathe - but not your mind!) It is distressing to see Russell constantly worried. Worried about how he will get round the house, will he need a new car to take a wheelchair, worried about Noeleen and how she will cope with the stress of watching him deteriorate and the toll that takes, the financial stress, funeral costs and so much more. If some of these worries are alleviated we know Russell will be able to relax a little and put his energies in to enjoying what time he has left.

Russell and Noeleen are very family focussed and have been generously involved in their communities over the years from Playcentre/kindy/school and working bees through to sports clubs and community events, it would be nice to now be able to help them out in their time of need.

Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is the name of a group of diseases that cause the death of the nerve cells (Neurones) that control the muscles that enable us to move, speak, swallow and breathe. With no nerves to activate them, these muscles gradually weaken and waste away. This causes progressive loss of mobility in limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. The progression varies from person to person. THERE IS NO CURE!

I am Noeleen's aunty and do not reside near them. This is one way of being able to support and help them.

Use of funds

Money raised will ultimately be used to renovate the bathroom and ongoing expenses and costs associated with Russell's ongoing care and comfort.

Yahoo - Bathroom complete  8 June 2020

Hi Everyone

You will all be breathing a sigh of relief as we move into Level 1 of this disastrous Covid-19 pandemic. It has certainly shaken the very core of our being and we realise how vulnerable lives can be. NZ, we have have done well thanks to each and everyone of us abiding by the rules as we moved through each level.

However, it is with great excitement that I write this update to let you all know that through all of your very generous donations the bathroom reno has now been completed. This has made a huge difference to their everyday lives. However, life is becoming more and more difficult for Russ so it would be timely for you all to make contact and give them both all the love, support and encouragement you can. I cannot thank you all enough for the support you have given thus far - please do keep it up in terms of phone calls and visits.

Russ and Noels - it has been a pleasure to have been able to help out in this major time of need and great to see the successful outcome.

Keep safe everyone and look after each other.

Much love

Aunty Liz
