To raise funds that will be the basis of an annual award in Daniel's name so he can keep contributing to the scientific community
Auckland
Sadly Dr. Daniel Chorley (PhD MedChem, UoA) passed away earlier this year after an 18 month battle with cancer.
He had only recently obtained he PhD and was 6 months into a Post Doctorate with Bayer (Germany) when he was diagnosed.
He is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most amazing humans anyone could ever have the pleasure of meeting. Incredibly passionate about science and science communication, a super hero for fighting for what was just and humble at the same time. He was a silent protector for those that needed his support and a vocal advocate when someone needed to fight for what is right.
He would eloquently challenge those who needed to be challenge (often to the glee of any observers - it was always so impressive to watch), he petitioned the government about Marriage equality (this document can still be found online) also active and influential within the Rainbow Youth Community.
This time last year he spoke of his two regrets; one being that he didn't get to contribute to science in the way he had hoped he would. A promise was made to make sure that this would not be the case.
Therefore a fund with the University of Auckland Foundation has been established. ALL money raised (other than the 5% to Give-a-little) will be used to fund an annual award in Daniel's memory. This award will be set up so to assist a passionate and dedicated PG student with that something extra in their research endeavours (specifics are yet to be signed off).
This page is being set up to assist with some of the initial funds to get the ball rolling. As mentioned other fundraisers of various kinds will be held in the future.
The ultimate goal is to reach $100k as this will allow the award to continue in perpetuity more or less.
Let's do this for Dr Daniel and for science!
A friend wanting to help Daniel achieve one of his life goals which was to contribute to the scientific community and the advancement of scientific research.
All money will go into a fund that has been established with the support of the University of Auckland Foundation to assist in research (medicinal chemistry - cancer) to be awarded to a PG student with a demonstrable commitment and passion for science.
