The Final Months of a Liver Cancer Patient
Auckland
I am a new immigrant from China. I have a 14-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter, and my wife and I live with them in Albany, Auckland. Two months ago, I was diagnosed with advanced-stage liver cancer. The public hospital told me that they could not do anything beyond providing palliative care. I had to seek help from a private doctor. However, since I do not have any health insurance, my wife has always been a homemaker, and I am the sole breadwinner of the family, we are currently in financial distress due to the high cost of private medical treatment. The doctor said that with aggressive treatment, my life expectancy could be more than six months, but without treatment, it might only be one or two months. I want to live a few more months to spend more time with my wife, my children, my Chinese family members who are about to come and see me for the last time. At the same time, I am very worried about the future costs of treatment and my funeral expenses, which will place an even heavier burden on my family. I am feeling very desperate right now.
