We're fundraising for a van to get high quality protein to the people
Wellington
The KaiIka Project utilises fish heads and frames which were previously going to waste. These previously discarded fish parts are now collected and redistributed to appreciate families. Our aim is to minimise our impact on the marine environment and address food insecurity.
The first 5,000kgs went in the blink of an eye and with a growing network of communities who appreciate these delicacies, we’ve been working hard to keep up with demand. Recently delivering over 400kgs every week!
Things were going great, until the wheels fell off. Literally.
We had been using a private vehicle, but it dramatically failed its latest WOF putting it beyond repair. Thankfully a good bugger stepped up and lent us his Toyota HiAce which he uses for transporting soft toys around. We chipped in for gas and it was smooth sailing for a few weeks … until the toys started to smell like fish. True story. We need a new plan.
Long story short. We have a community who love kaimoana, a cost of living crisis which is making it harder to put food on the table, a commitment to deliver 20,000kgs in the next 12 months but no way of actually transporting the fish. It’s time to invest in a fit for purpose van that can carry this project into the future.
Our goal is to raise monies from individuals who share our passion for kaimoana and have an appetite to reduce food insecurity. Meanwhile we’ll go fishing for organizations prepared to top up the rest and possibly a little extra to keep fuel in the tank.
We need a Toyota Van to continue effectively, with increased suspension & customised internal fit out. ITM are donating the timber, Burnsco the fish bins. We’ve got a $2k discount on the engineering. We still need to find $18,700 to make it happen.
Thank you - The Kai Ika Project Wellington 31 August 2023
Yesterday we picked up our new waka!
After seeing us on 1News, Helen from Te Mata Figs in Havelock North reach out to offer us a refrigerated van at an amazing price of $8500. A van like this would easily go for closer to $40,000 so it’s safe to say we are pretty gobsmacked by their generosity. The remaining funds will go towards on road costs and fuel to get around.
We now have this fit for purpose, refrigerated van that will help us collect and share tonnes of prized but previously under-utilised fish parts over the coming months.
To all of you who chipped in to make this possible - our most sincere thanks. Because of you we can now lock in our current operations and look to begin distributions in additional communities.
Together we’re reducing waste, filling bellies, celebrating kai moana and showing maximum respect - one beautiful van load at a time.
Absolutely stoked. Bring on summer!
