The Kai Ika Project - Wellington

  • Thank you - The Kai Ika Project Wellington

      31 August 2023

Yesterday we picked up our new waka!

After seeing us on 1News, Helen from Te Mata Figs in Havelock North reach out to offer us a refrigerated van at an amazing price of $8500. A van like this would easily go for closer to $40,000 so it’s safe to say we are pretty gobsmacked by their generosity. The remaining funds will go towards on road costs and fuel to get around.

We now have this fit for purpose, refrigerated van that will help us collect and share tonnes of prized but previously under-utilised fish parts over the coming months.

To all of you who chipped in to make this possible - our most sincere thanks. Because of you we can now lock in our current operations and look to begin distributions in additional communities.

Together we’re reducing waste, filling bellies, celebrating kai moana and showing maximum respect - one beautiful van load at a time.

    Absolutely stoked. Bring on summer!

Having heard about our plight and need for a van, Te Mata Figs in Hastings have have generously offered us the chance to buy one of their refrigerated Toyota Hi Ace vans. The price? Only $8500. To put this in context we have seen similar second hand refrigerated vans on sale for over $40,000.

Thanks to the remarkable generosity of Helen and the team at Te Mata Figs we have been able to reduce the request on the Give A Little page to $10,000. This will allow us the funds to buy a van, insure it and have it warranted and registered fort the next 12 months.

This is incredibly exciting. The vehicle is more than we hoped for and, incredibly we are closer to achieving our goal.

We have audacious goals of sharing 20,000kg of kaimoana in the next 12 months and this will only possible because we are standing on the shoulders of giants. Thank you Te Mata Figs and everyone who has already donated!
