The Rebound Fund: Fixing Our Basketball Court Vandalism

$1,070 of $1,000 goal
Given by 36 generous donors in 4 weeks

Join our community effort to fix the senseless damage done to our school's basketball court, restoring fun, fitness, and friendship.

Birchville, Upper Hutt

A Broken Court, A Shattered Spirit

This isn't just a broken piece of plastic—it's a vital piece of our school's playground, and right now, it's shattered.

Our beloved Airtime basketball hoop backboard was recently smashed by a vandal with a rock. We fundraised for these just after COVID lockdown had finished, as we knew the community needed somewhere to come and reconnect socially. The image speaks for itself: the glass is spiderwebbed, the court is closed, and the silence is deafening.

This court is more than just a place to shoot hoops. It's where students burn off energy, where friendships are forged in a quick game of 'taniwha,' and where teamwork is learned under the open sky. Now, an act of senseless vandalism has taken that away, leaving our students disheartened and without their favorite place to play. This piece of equipment was used not only by our students, but the wider community as a whole. We love having the community use our resources, but not abusing them like this latest incident.

We refuse to let a single negative act define our community. We need your help to replace the plexiglass backboard and bring the sound of bouncing basketballs and cheering kids back to our schoolyard. The cost is $1000 for a new plexiglass backboard.

Please donate today to help us fix the damage, send a strong message that our community stands together, and get our students back on the court!

Any extra funds will go towards getting security cameras so this doesn’t happen again.

About us

Birchville School is a little kura nestled next to the Awakairangi river, and underneath the Remutaka Ranges. We have a roll of around 140 students, and love how we are an essential part of the Birchville community.

Use of funds

The money will be spent on purchasing a new plexiglass backboard, shipping and delivery, and professional installation to restore our school's vandalized basketball hoop.

Any extra funds will help buy security cameras so this doesn’t happen again.

Basketball backboard success!  17 December 2025

Ngā mihinui to everyone who helped fundraise for our replacement backboard from the vandalism that happened at Birchville School.

Big thanks to Chris from Steel E.D & Patton - https://www.sandp.co.nz for coming through with the goods - a metal backboard that will hopefully stand the test of time and use.

Again, thank you!
