Emily's 'Dear Boobs'-a-thon

$710 donated
Given by 19 generous donors in 7 weeks

My attempt to run the Hawke's Bay Marathon to raise funds to share more 'Dear Boobs' books with waiting rooms in New Zealand and beyond!

Bay of Plenty

I'd like to blame this ambitious goal entirely on my two lost boobs.

Every donation will contribute to more 'Dear Boobs' books reaching those it was created for, via the waiting rooms in which women sit during their treatment for breast cancer.

What exactly is a 'Dear Boobs'-a-thon?

Nine women are diagnosed with breast cancer daily in New Zealand alone. Knowing this, it is clear to me that the 'Dear Boobs' book I compiled last year, containing one hundred letters to boobs from women affected by breast cancer, still has many more women to reach and support!

Incredibly, 2018 saw one thousand 'Dear Boobs' books shared with waiting rooms like those I had sat in during my breast cancer treatment. I'd love your help to keep sharing the wisdom and to continue to inspire those who have been though breast cancer surgery. The positive feedback about the book from readers and the 'Dear Boobs' community has been amazing and as a result I have a long list of new waiting room locations ready for books to head to.

I'd love, with your help to enable more women going through breast cancer to feel like they are among great company, to laugh, to cry, and to heal a little more as they read the intimate conversations with wobbly womanly parts.

To do this I need YOUR GENEROSITY to support my 'Dear Boobs'-a-thon! Which is all about me getting my post-cancer body minus my original 'Dear Boobs' across the finish line at the Hawke's Bay marathon.

I'll let you in on a secret ...

I almost backed out. NOT of running the marathon, I am excited about giving that a go, but about SHARING that I was training to run a marathon, after recently having cancer.

It's weird maybe, but I don't want to make others who have been through, or are going through any type of cancer treatment or chronic illness, feel like they aren't trying hard enough. And that somehow they should be doing a marathon too. I don't want anyone to feel that they must do better, set a higher goal, or lift the bar! Having cancer is a different experience for everyone, and importantly, so is it's aftermath. I am privileged to be able to give training for this event a try and for those who wish they could do something like this, but are unable to at this time, my efforts are on your behalf too.

I would LOVE if you could support me with a donation.

The idea is, if it isn't clear by now, that I run further than I have ever run before....a marathon, and ask you to donate in return for my efforts. Though admittedly, I am beginning to thing that my daughter's suggestion of a bake sale would have been a lot easier... I guess I can't back out now though!

Thank you,

With Gratitude, Emily xxx

Marathon highs and marathon lows  20 May 2019

I made it to the line. It wasn't all smooth sailing as I of course expected. The highs were emotional and at times surreal, and the lows were deep and somewhat profound. I jogged (albeit very slowly) the entire time apart from the aid stations when I ate and drank, and about 500m with 7 km to go, when I had a bit of a 'moment'. I understand everyone has one of these at some point in their first marathon, I didn't want to be left out lol. I pulled out of my 'moment' with my mind focused on you, on all those cheering me on and also with gratitude that I was even out there doing it! That I even made it to the START line, never mind the finish line.

I am proud, I am sore, I am stuffed full of pizza and I am convinced that marathon running is not a healthy pastime for me for the future - although I may have to give one more a go lol! I am very excited to rest my legs and start working through my spreadsheet of recipients for more Dear Boobs books.

If you have a waiting room in mind, please let me know and I can add it to my list. Again, thanks for being there along side me. Your support here means that more women like me will read the wisdom in the Dear Boobs book and feel supported and encouraged and amongst great company on their 'marathon' effort through the treatment and aftermath of breast cancer.

Much love, Emily
