Nearly 17,500 people signed a petition supporting the Track. EDS wants to stop supporters having a say. We aim to give supporters a voice.
Hawke's Bay
Environmental Defence Society are threatening legal action against the Craggy Range Walking Track and are attempting to have the Track removed without public consultation. We need money to represent the position of the overwhelming majority of people who support the track.
Craggy Range Winery and the Peabody Family generously purchased a piece of land on the eastern side of Te Mata Peak and paid for a professionally-built track up the side of the Peak for the benefit of the people of Hawke’s Bay.
Controversy ensued when some people objected to the visual appearance of the track and it became apparent that proper consultation with Iwi and the public had not been undertaken before permitting the track. The record shows that Hastings District Council was at fault for the lack of consultation, not Craggy Range. Petitions both for and against the track arose. An overwhelming majority of petitioners supported the track.
The Te Mata Peak Peoples’ Track Society was formed by a group of friends and acquaintances who share a passion for the Craggy Range Walking Track. We share the belief that the views of the people of Hawke’s Bay need to be properly represented in determining the future of the Track and public access to the eastern side of Te Mata Peak generally.
All funds will go to betterment of the Track and to represent supporters of the Track in legal proceedings if required. Any excess funds we raise will be donated to the Te Mata Peak Trust Board.
All members of the Society give their time free of charge.
